Apple is preparing to launch a new generation of the AirTag. The small tracking device, which launched in 2021, will soon receive an update, according to Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman. In his latest Power On newsletter, Gurman writes that the new AirTag is "almost ready" and has been in preparation for its market launch for several months. The planned sales launch is set for 2025.
The AirTag was designed to make finding items easier. You can attach it to keys, bags, or suitcases and track it using the "Find My" app on your iPhone. Bluetooth and ultra-wideband technology provide a fairly accurate location—especially if you're using an iPhone with a U1 chip. Since its launch, the AirTag has established itself as a practical accessory, but it has also come under criticism, primarily due to its potential for stalking. Apple seems to be responding to this criticism with its successor.
Three upgrades that the AirTag 2 will bring
Extended range thanks to new UWB chip
The new AirTag is expected to feature Apple's second-generation Ultra Wideband chip. The new chip, already used in current iPhone and Apple Watch models, is expected to triple the range of the previous AirTag. This means you'll be able to locate lost items over a significantly greater distance—assuming your iPhone supports the technology.
Integration with Vision Pro and spatial computing
Another innovation is the planned integration with Apple's Vision Pro and thus with so-called "spatial computing." Although details are currently scarce, it is expected that in the future, you will see AirTags directly in your field of view when using the Vision Pro. This will make finding lost items even more intuitive – for example, via augmented reality.
Tamper-proof loudspeaker against misuse
Apple also plans to equip the new AirTag with a tamper-evident speaker. This is the company's response to ongoing criticism that AirTags could be misused to track people unnoticed. With the previous model, it was technically possible to deactivate or remove the integrated speaker. The new AirTag aims to prevent this. The speaker is designed to be permanently installed and protected against tampering.
Design remains largely the same
Visually, the AirTag 2 will apparently remain virtually unchanged. The casing is said to be the same as the first model—round, white, and compact. Operation via the "Find My" app is also expected to remain largely unchanged. This means no need to switch if you're already using the old AirTag.
Prices are likely to remain stable
In Germany, a single AirTag currently costs €39. A pack of four is €129. There's no indication so far that Apple will increase the price of the new model. If that happens, you'll get the new features at no extra cost.
Good timing, meaningful improvements
The AirTag 2 isn't a revolution, but it does offer several targeted improvements. Increased range, AR integration, and better protection against misuse make it a worthwhile update. If you're currently considering buying an AirTag, it's worth waiting a bit longer. The market launch is expected soon—and you'll get a significantly more versatile device for the same price.
