The iPhone 17 Air is about to be officially unveiled, and there are already clear clues about a key technical feature. A well-known leaker from China has published details about the processor inside, attracting the attention of not only fans but also analysts. The information points to a powerful chip with deliberate limitations that are likely no coincidence.
The upcoming iPhone 17 Air is expected to feature an A19 Pro chip, albeit not at its maximum performance. While the iPhone 17 Pro models utilize the full 6-core GPU, the Air model will be equipped with a 5-core GPU. This decision could be related to the device's ultra-thin design or strategic product differentiation. However, for most users, the difference in practice is likely to be minimal.
A19 Pro in the iPhone 17 Air
The Chinese Weibo leaker "Fixed Focus Digital," who has over two million followers, reports that the iPhone 17 Air will feature an A19 Pro chip with five GPU cores. Only the Pro models will have access to the full GPU performance of six cores. The lower core count may be due to chip binning, i.e., sorting the processors according to manufacturing yield. It is also possible that Apple wants to reduce heat generation in the particularly slim chassis of the Air model.
Deviations from previous forecasts
This information contradicts older predictions. Over a year ago, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted that the iPhone 17 Air would only feature a standard A19 chip without a Pro designation. Jeff Pu, another experienced industry observer, initially even assumed an A18 chip. He has since revised this assessment and, like Fixed Focus Digital, expects an A19 in the base iPhone 17 and the A19 Pro in the Air.
Significance for everyday life
Even though the GPU performance of the iPhone 17 Air is slightly reduced, there will be hardly any noticeable difference in typical usage such as browsing, messaging, photography, or video streaming. Only in particularly graphics-intensive applications such as high-end games or professional 3D editing might the Pro version have an advantage.
Background to the leaker
Fixed Focus Digital has proven to be a reliable source in the past. Before the iPhone 16e launched, it had already published the correct product name for the successor to the iPhone SE. Its predictions for the iPhone 17 Air fit its reputation for providing accurate details early on.
iPhone 17 Air just before official presentation
Apple is expected to announce the iPhone 17 series on Tuesday, September 9. All technical details will soon be officially confirmed. The iPhone 17 Air is likely to generate buzz not only with its ultra-thin design but also with its use of the powerful, yet specifically modified A19 Pro chip. (Image: MajinBuOfficial)
