The next generation of the Apple TV 4K is apparently imminent. Speculation about new hardware has been rife for some time, and now there are concrete indications of an imminent market launch. A second, independent source has confirmed that Apple does indeed plan to release a new model this year. While details on features are still lacking, the timing and the company's strategy are becoming clearer.

Since its launch, the Apple TV 4K has established itself as a powerful streaming box in the Apple ecosystem. It serves not only as an interface to Apple TV+, but also as a HomeKit hub, gaming console, and media center. The current model was last updated in 2022 and has been quiet since then. The fact that concrete hints of a successor are now emerging suggests that Apple will soon follow up with new technology and possibly new features.

Second source confirms new Apple TV 4K for 2025

A report from MacRumors now provides new confirmation. A source familiar with the company's plans says that a new Apple TV 4K will definitely be released this year. The current model will be replaced by the new version and discontinued. At the end of last year, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman first reported that Apple was working on a new generation, scheduled for release in 2025. Since then, things have been quiet—until now. The second source makes an imminent release more likely than ever, even though no new technical details have been revealed.

Possible performance on September 9

While there's no concrete date for the launch yet, rumors are mounting around September 9th, the day the annual iPhone event is expected to take place. It's very likely that the new Apple TV 4K will be unveiled there—along with the iPhone 17. The timing would be strategically perfect. Apple is planning a wide range of new content on Apple TV+, launching in September. A new streaming hardware launch at the same time would further strengthen the platform and put the Apple TV 4K in the spotlight.

Technology, chip and possible camera

Although no new official details about the features have leaked out yet, there are plausible clues about the possible upgrades. A more powerful Class A chip is expected, which, in addition to improved performance, could also support Apple Intelligence – Apple's proprietary AI infrastructure, which is set to be more integrated into devices and software in the future. There's also talk of a new Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chip, developed entirely by Apple for the first time. This could make the connection more stable and faster, which would be particularly beneficial when streaming 4K content or controlling the device via other Apple devices.

  • Another possible feature: an integrated camera. The first hints of this can be found in tvOS 26, the upcoming operating system. If Apple actually takes this step, it would be a first for the Apple TV 4K. Native FaceTime calls directly on the TV would then be conceivable – something that some competitors have been able to offer for some time.

Good time for a hardware update

A new Apple TV 4K would come at just the right time. The streaming market is fiercely competitive, with competitors like Amazon Fire TV, Google Chromecast, and Roku regularly launching new models with fresh features. While the current Apple TV 4K is still powerful, it's now almost three years old. A hardware upgrade focusing on performance, AI, and connectivity would make the product competitive again—especially in conjunction with new Apple services and content.

New model in sight: Apple TV 4K before product change

The new Apple TV 4K is apparently imminent. A second, independent source has now confirmed that Apple plans to release a new model in 2025. September 9 is considered a prime date for the unveiling during the iPhone keynote. While the technical details aren't yet fully known, some interesting new features are hinting at it – including a new chip, improved wireless technology, and possibly even a camera. There's a lot of evidence to suggest that the Apple TV 4K will soon receive a major update. (Image: Shutterstock / Masarik)
