The iPhone 17 is causing new speculation just weeks before its official launch. Apple will unveil the next generation of iPhones in September – and there are already hints of a small but interesting detail. Several leaks indicate that the official iPhone 17 cases could offer the option to attach a lanyard. A feature Apple has already used in other products and could provide greater comfort and security.
Apple is about to unveil the new iPhone generation. In addition to the expected hardware updates, the iPhone 17 could also feature a change to accessories that are particularly useful in everyday life. Two independent leakers have published reports and drawings that indicate special attachment points for a lanyard on the official Apple cases. This would tie in with a concept already used on other devices such as the AirPods Pro 2 and the iPod touch 5.
Information from two leak sources
Earlier this week, leaker Majin Bu reported that Apple might include the option to attach a lanyard to the official iPhone 17 cases. Shortly thereafter, DuanRui published an alleged CAD drawing of the iPhone 17 Pro case. The image shows two small areas in the lower corners that could be intended for a lanyard. DuanRui frequently sources his content from the Chinese social media platform Weibo, which has been repeatedly known as a source of early Apple leaks.
Previous examples of Apple products
Apple has already implemented such a feature in other devices. The charging cases for the AirPods Pro 2 have a cutout for attaching a lanyard. Apple doesn't sell its own lanyard, but offers several suitable third-party options in its online store. With the fifth-generation iPod touch, Apple went a step further. The device itself had a built-in mechanism for a lanyard, without the need for a case.
Realistic prospect, but no confirmation
The CAD drawings and reports fit Apple's accessory strategy and could be realistic. If the feature actually comes to fruition, it's expected that Apple itself won't offer an official lanyard, leaving the market to third-party providers.
Small change with big benefits on the iPhone 17
The iPhone 17, which will be unveiled in September, could feature a small but practical design change alongside the usual technical improvements: the ability to attach a lanyard directly to the official case. If this proves to be the case, it could make everyday life safer and more convenient for many users. It's still unclear whether Apple will actually take this step—but what is certain is that this innovation is already generating a lot of buzz and is another reason to eagerly anticipate the event next month.
