Apple plans OLED MacBook Pro with M6 – date unclear

Apple has been planning a major overhaul of the MacBook Pro for some time. In addition to a new, thinner design, the model will feature an OLED display and the M6 chip for the first time. Late 2026 was originally considered a realistic launch date, but current indications point to a possible delay to 2027.

Rumors about the next major MacBook Pro update have been circulating for months. The switch to OLED technology would bring a significant leap in image quality, while the M6 chip is expected to deliver even more performance. Industry observers like Bloomberg's Mark Gurman regularly provide new details that paint a clearer picture of Apple's plans—and now also hint at possible delays.

Planned innovations in the MacBook Pro

The next-to-next generation of the MacBook Pro is expected to feature a noticeably thinner chassis. The core of the redesign is the switch to OLED displays, which deliver deeper blacks, more vibrant colors, and improved energy efficiency. Combined with the M6 chip, Apple promises significantly increased performance while simultaneously optimizing battery life. This model is being touted as the most comprehensive redesign in years. In addition to the pure technology, the design is also expected to be significantly revised to visually differentiate the device from its predecessors.

Original plans and current development

Initially, the schedule was clear: First, a MacBook Pro with the M5 chip would be released at the end of this year, followed by the major M6 OLED revision at the end of 2026. However, the launch of the M5 model has since been reportedly pushed back to spring 2026. This change also affects the schedule for the M6 OLED MacBook, which will now likely not arrive until early 2027. Mark Gurman sees the delay as likely, but doesn't rule out the possibility that Apple will still maintain a tighter release schedule. Previous years show that two MacBook Pro models in a calendar year are quite possible.

Review of Apple's release strategy

An example of two major updates in a short period of time occurred in 2023: In January, Apple introduced MacBook Pro models with the M2 Pro and M2 Max, followed in October by devices with the M3 Pro and M3 Max. If Apple follows a similar path, an earlier market launch of the OLED MacBook Pro is conceivable, although current planning points more towards 2027.

Current alternatives for buyers

Those who don't want to wait for the OLED MacBook Pro can already find powerful models in the range. The MacBook Pro with the M4 chip, in particular, offers very high performance and a mini-LED display that is among the best on the market. The 14-inch base model is currently available in Germany starting at €1,899 and is considered an attractive offer for professional users.

OLED MacBook Pro as the next big technological leap for Apple

The introduction of a MacBook Pro with an OLED display and the M6 chip would be a major step forward for Apple. Even if the market launch may be delayed by a few months, the device is expected to represent a noticeable advance in design and technology in 2027. Until then, the current models remain a solid choice for high-performance work without having to wait for the next big innovation. (Image: Shutterstock / Lazy Camel)
