Apple and the AI transformation: What role does Giannandrea play?

Apple is under pressure. While companies like Google and OpenAI are making headlines with their AI development, Apple appears to be keeping a low profile in this area. But a lot is happening behind the scenes. One person in particular remains the center of attention: John Giannandrea. Despite internal discussions about his possible departure, he is staying with Apple for the time being – and still has a lot planned.

Apple is late to the AI revolution. Other tech companies are already much further ahead, especially when it comes to voice assistants and large language models. John Giannandrea, Apple's head of machine learning and artificial intelligence, is caught between two fronts. Some executives within the company would like to replace him. Nevertheless, he remains in place because he continues to fulfill important tasks and attract highly qualified talent. The restructuring of Apple's AI is well underway – and Giannandrea plays a central role.

Apple's AI strategy: Between lagging behind and restarting

Apple has long neglected the development of its own AI systems or only pursued it in the background. The result: its voice assistant Siri cannot keep up with modern competing products such as ChatGPT or Gemini. Giannandrea was aware of these shortcomings and openly admitted delays. Critics accuse him of focusing too heavily on the basic technology – i.e., machine learning and model training – instead of on functions that users directly experience. Therefore, handing over responsibility for Siri to Mike Rockwell was a major step. Rockwell is responsible for Vision Pro at Apple and pursues a much more user-centric strategy. While Giannandrea saw Siri primarily as an interface for controlling devices such as Apple TV or HomeKit, Rockwell wants to develop Siri into a true assistant platform that can communicate with you flexibly.

Giannandrea's role at Apple: Not without controversy

According to a Bloomberg report, it's unclear within the company how long Giannandrea will remain in office. Some Apple executives would prefer his resignation. There's also internal dissatisfaction with his leadership style. Insiders say he didn't exert enough pressure to secure resources for his projects. The employee is quoted as saying:

He would have had to be much, much more aggressive in raising funding to make it big. But John isn't a businessman. He's a technologist.

Additionally, his team was reportedly given preferential treatment within the company. There were reports of perks that other teams weren't entitled to. One example: free meals for Giannandrea's team, even though this is unusual at Apple. Another employee reported:

I know it sounds silly, but there's no free food at Apple. They delivered a year after everyone else and still got free food.

What Giannandrea is currently doing

Despite this internal criticism, Giannandrea remains on board for the time being. He continues to be responsible for research into large language models, the integration of AI into Apple's operating systems, and the leadership of the AI analyst team. He is currently focused on improving Apple's existing AI engine to ensure optimal integration with the next generation of Apple hardware, with a particular focus on chips with more powerful neural performance that will be included in future devices.

Acquisitions of smaller AI companies

At the same time, Apple has acquired several smaller AI companies. The goal is to accelerate its own development and make progress in both core technologies and user-facing features. These strategic acquisitions are intended to help it catch up with the competition and create new momentum – even in areas where Apple has not previously played a major role.

Siri under new leadership: Rockwell's vision

With the handover of Siri to Mike Rockwell, the company's direction is also changing. Rockwell's goal is to make Siri a central point of interaction between you and your device. To achieve this, Siri will have access to more data sources, respond more flexibly to questions, and communicate better with other Apple systems. While it's not yet clear when users will actually notice improvements, there's a lot of internal activity. The goal is clear: Siri will be more than just a voice interface—it will become an intelligent assistant.

Between upheaval and new beginnings: Apple's AI reorientation

Apple has long hesitated when it comes to AI development. Now the company is following suit, and although a leadership change is being considered internally, John Giannandrea remains a key figure for the time being. He's working on the technical foundation, while Mike Rockwell is driving the vision for a more user-friendly Siri. One thing is clear: Apple is trying to make up for lost ground – with investments, staff restructuring, and new hardware. When you'll actually see any of this remains to be seen.
