AirPods Max: When will Apple's new generation arrive?

The AirPods Max are Apple's only over-ear headphones and are among the most expensive models in the Apple portfolio. Many users appreciate the sound quality, the premium design, and the integration into the Apple ecosystem. At the same time, however, there are also criticisms – especially regarding the weight, the lack of further development, and the outdated chip. Those waiting for a new generation are wondering: When will the next model arrive, and what will change?

Since their launch in late 2020, Apple has only minimally redesigned the AirPods Max once – in fall 2024, the Lightning connector was replaced with USB-C. Technically, however, nothing has changed: The H1 chip remains the same, newer features like Adaptive Audio are missing, and the weight remains quite high at 386 grams. Other headphones from Apple, such as the AirPods Pro or the Beats Studio Pro, now offer more features at a significantly lower price. Now there are clues as to when a truly new generation can be expected – and what might change.

Next model probably not until 2027

According to well-known Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple will not introduce the next generation of AirPods Max before 2027. In a tweet, Kuo wrote that the new model will have a revised design, indicating a major update—in contrast to the minor USB-C adjustment of 2024. This statement is important because it suggests that Apple is specifically working on the weaknesses of the current version.

Lighter design planned

According to Kuo, a key aspect of the planned update is weight. The current AirPods Max weigh 386 grams, which many users find uncomfortable – especially when worn for extended periods. By comparison, the Beats Studio Pro weigh just 260 grams and also offer active noise cancellation and good sound quality. The weight difference is primarily due to the choice of materials: The AirPods Max are made primarily of aluminum, which, while high-quality, is also heavier than plastic. According to Kuo, the new model will have a lighter design, possibly through different materials or a modified construction.

Technology still outdated

Another weak point of the current AirPods Max is the H1 chip. This chip dates back to 2019 and is also used in older AirPods models. Newer devices like the AirPods Pro 2 already use the H2 chip, which is more efficient, offers better audio processing, and supports new features like Adaptive Audio and improved Transparency Mode. Whether the AirPods Max will get the H2 chip in 2027 or even an even newer chip generation is not officially known. However, it is very likely that Apple will upgrade it to bring the headphones up to date.

What you can expect from the new model

In summary, some likely innovations of the next generation can be mentioned:

  • Significantly lighter housing for better wearing comfort
  • New design that clearly differs from the current model
  • New chip (H2 or later) to enable modern features
  • Possibly improved battery life due to more efficient technology
  • USB-C remains as a connection

Currently, there are no indications of price changes or new colors. Nothing has been announced yet regarding active noise cancellation (ANC) or microphone improvements. However, it's likely that Apple will make improvements in these areas as well.

AirPods Max today: Solid, but no longer up to date

According to reliable sources, the next generation of AirPods Max will not be released until 2027 at the earliest. It is expected to feature a revised, lighter design and be equipped with modern technology. Anyone currently considering a purchase should be aware that the current model is technically outdated, and there won't be a new one in the foreseeable future. Those who can live with the weight and missing features will still get solid Apple quality with excellent sound and strong noise cancellation. However, those waiting for the next major update will need patience—but it could be worth it. (Image: Shutterstock / Masarik)
