The Emmy nominations are out – and Apple TV+ has far and away come out on top. Leading the way is "Severance." The series about a divided workplace is not only popular with critics but also a flagship for Apple's streaming service. Shortly after the Emmy news, there was a small but insightful update on the third season. While there's no release date yet, it does contain some important information about the current status of production.
"Severance" is one of those series that stands out from the crowd due to its concept, its direction, and its atmosphere. After the end of the second season, it was clear that the story was far from over. But fans had to wait almost three years for new episodes. The question of when Season 3 will continue has been hanging in the air for months. An interview with Apple TV programming director Matt Cherniss at least provides a brief status update—even if there are no concrete dates yet.
Apple confirms: Season 3 is nearing production start
In an interview with Variety , Cherniss was asked if Season 3 is moving forward as planned. His response:
I know they're working on it as quickly as possible. When a show is as successful as 'Severance,' you want to make sure everything's spot on when the show returns, and that takes time. But they're working on it.
That sounds evasive at first, but it contains a clear message. While the series isn't shooting yet, it's apparently close. Work on the new chapter seems far enough along that there's already internal discussion about starting production soon. Had that not been the case, Cherniss likely wouldn't have even addressed this point. He also responded to the question of whether it will take another three years, like between seasons 1 and 2:
Nobody wants it to take three years again... I don't think we have a production start date yet, but we're working on it.
This confirms that there's no official start date for filming yet. However, the writing or planning phase appears to be over or about to end. Between the lines, it's clear that Apple is working internally toward an early start to filming.

When is the third season coming?
Despite the progress, it should be clear that the wait is far from over. If filming starts in the coming months, a release would be possible by the end of 2026 at the earliest. 2027 is more realistic. Series like "Severance" require not only a long preparation period but also complex post-production. Ben Stiller, who contributes significantly to the series as a producer and director, had already indicated that there would not be such a long break between seasons this time. Cherniss has now confirmed this – without making any binding promises. Both statements, however, show that the company is aware of the fans' frustration. Nevertheless, the priority remains on quality. Apple appears willing to give the creative team the time they need to continue the complex story at the level of the first two seasons.
Apple TV+ focuses on quality over speed
"Severance" is part of Apple TV+'s growing prestige portfolio. The service, which costs €9.99 per month, offers not only "Severance," but also series such as "Ted Lasso," "Silo," "The Morning Show," and "Shrinking." All of these formats focus not on quantity, but on clearly defined quality standards. In the case of "Severance," that means no rushed production, no compromises. Apple knows that this series is one of the best they have in their program—and wants to prove it again in Season 3. The numerous Emmy nominations show that their plan is working so far.
Between hope and reality: When does Severance season 3 start?
A release date for "Severance" Season 3 hasn't been set yet. But production appears to be starting soon. Apple is keeping quiet about details, but statements from Matt Cherniss indicate that intensive work is underway behind the scenes. Those waiting for new episodes will need to continue to be patient. Everything points to a release in 2026 at the earliest—with 2027 being the most realistic scenario. At least it doesn't look like another three-year gap. And that's progress. (Image: Apple)
