OpenAI halves the price of ChatGPT Pro – with a focus on Codex

OpenAI is introducing a new version of ChatGPT Pro for $100 per month. The plan is primarily aimed at developers using the AI coding agent Codex – for whom the previous Plus tier is no longer sufficient.

AI-powered software development is booming, and OpenAI is responding with a new pricing tier. Previously, ChatGPT Pro cost $200 per month – a price that was difficult for many individual developers to justify. Now, there's a more affordable $100 option specifically tailored to users of the AI coding tool Codex. This move comes at a time when AI coding tools are flooding the App Store with a deluge of new app submissions.

OpenAI introduced the Codex app for macOS in February, providing developers with an agent-based coding assistant that can independently write, test, and refactor code. Since then, its user base has grown rapidly: according to OpenAI, Codex now has over three million weekly users – a fivefold increase within three months, with 70 percent month-over-month growth.

What the new plan offers

The new ChatGPT Pro tier, priced at $100, sits between the existing Plus plan ($20) and the previous Pro plan ($200). Compared to the Plus plan, it offers five times more Codex usage, access to all Pro features including exclusive models, and unlimited access to Instant and Thinking models.

For the launch, there is a limited-time offer: Until the end of May, subscribers to the $100 plan will receive ten times more Codex usage than in the Plus plan – that is, double the regular allowance.

OpenAI: Two Pro tiers at a glance

OpenAI now offers two Pro versions. Pro 100 is aimed at users who regularly use advanced tools and models during the week. Pro 200 is designed for intensive, continuous workflows that also include parallel projects – with twenty times the usage compared to Plus.

Both plans contain the same core features. The only difference lies in the usage quota. Those who use Codex occasionally will still find the Plus plan sufficient. Those who work on multiple projects daily will likely be well served by Pro 100. Pro 200 remains relevant for power users and teams working on multiple codebases simultaneously.

Why this is relevant for Apple users

Codex is available as a native Mac app and is used by many developers in the Apple ecosystem – for both iOS and macOS app development as well as web projects. The more affordable Pro tier makes agent-based coding more accessible to individual developers and small teams.

At the same time, Apple is expanding its own developer tools: Xcode recently added support for coding models and agents, and research into tools like SQUIRE for UI prototyping shows that Apple intends to develop its own long-term answer to OpenAI's Codex and Anthropic's Claude Code. Until then, Codex remains the central tool for AI-powered programming for many Apple developers. (Image: OpenAI)
