The current beta version of macOS 26.1 provides the first concrete indications that Apple is working on a revised version of the Pro Display XDR. References in the code for macOS "Tahoe" beta 3 point to a display with an integrated webcam. This could mean that the Pro Display, which has remained unchanged since 2019, could finally receive an update.
The Pro Display XDR has been considered the benchmark among professional monitors since its launch in 2019. With a 32-inch screen, 6K resolution, and a starting price of around €5,500, it was clearly aimed at professional users. Since then, however, the model has remained unchanged, while Apple has regularly updated almost all of its other product lines. The more affordable Studio Display, at least in 2022, added an integrated camera, speakers, and Center Stage—features previously lacking in the Pro Display XDR. Now, there are new clues from macOS 26.1 Beta 3 that show that Apple is working on a reissue of the high-end monitor.
Code in macOS 26.1 Beta 3 shows possible camera integration
References to a camera and a "Desk View" camera were discovered in the code of the third beta version of macOS 26.1 "Tahoe." These terms are familiar from devices featuring Apple's Center Stage technology. This is a 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera that automatically tracks people in the frame while simultaneously providing a desk view. The Pro Display XDR was previously the only product in the professional Mac accessory segment without a camera. Integrating this technology would make the monitor significantly more versatile—especially for video conferencing and hybrid work environments.
What could change with the new Pro Display XDR
In addition to the camera, several technical improvements are being speculated. A new 8K panel with a screen diagonal of 32 inches is possible. OLED technology and ProMotion with 120 Hertz are also being discussed to improve color reproduction and response times. The model number J527 also appeared in the code for macOS 26.1. This is being discussed as a potential identifier for a new Pro Display XDR. So far, this is the only concrete indication that Apple is working on a new monitor other than the Studio Display. Since 2022, there have been hardly any reports or leaks about the Pro Display XDR, which makes the current discoveries all the more remarkable.
Connection with the upcoming Mac Pro
The new display could be released alongside an updated Mac Pro. The current tower still runs on an M2 Ultra chip, while the M3 Ultra was already introduced in March 2025 alongside the Mac Studio. The next logical generation would be the M5 Ultra, which is not expected until mid-2026 at the earliest. It therefore seems more likely that Apple will unveil the new Mac Pro and the Pro Display XDR together at that time. An announcement in fall 2025 is theoretically conceivable, but unlikely. If Apple had actually planned to equip the Mac Pro with the M3 Ultra, this update would likely have already been released in March. A later date would rather suggest that development work is focused on the next chip generation.
Apple could also introduce the new display separately—perhaps via a press release, without accompanying hardware. This method has been used several times in the past, for example, for minor updates to existing devices. However, since the Pro Display XDR is primarily intended as a complement to the Mac Pro, a joint presentation would be more strategically appropriate.
Outlook on Apple's monitor strategy
With the introduction of the Studio Display, Apple has created a clear distinction between consumer and pro devices. While the Studio Display is aimed at a broader target audience, the Pro Display XDR remains the high-end model for professional users. A new edition with a camera, modern panel technology, and macOS-optimized integration would continue this lineage. At the same time, the Pro Display XDR would leave behind the last major Apple hardware without a dedicated camera.

The discoveries in macOS 26.1 Beta 3 provide the clearest evidence yet of a new Pro Display XDR. The code suggests an integrated webcam with Center Stage and Desk View, while the model number J527 suggests an upcoming device. Exactly when the new generation will be released remains unclear. It's likely that Apple will announce it alongside the M5 Ultra Mac Pro in mid-2026.
