With the release of iOS 26.1 Beta 3, there are new indications that Apple could soon be adding additional third-party AI integrations to the system. After launching the ChatGPT integration with iOS 18.2 in December 2024, the company now appears to be preparing the next stage of its AI strategy. Code changes in the current beta version clearly point to new interfaces that could be intended for additional AI services.
In recent months, Apple has focused heavily on the development of Apple Intelligence. The goal is to deeply integrate artificial intelligence into the system without compromising privacy and security. The collaboration with OpenAI and the integration of ChatGPT were the first major steps in this direction. Since then, many have been waiting for Apple to allow other AI models—such as Google Gemini, which has long been discussed as a potential partner. With iOS 26.1, that moment could be getting closer.
Code changes in iOS 26.1 Beta 3
Apple has released the third beta of iOS 26.1. Officially, there were hardly any visible changes, aside from a new app icon for Apple TV. At first glance, the update seems unspectacular. But in the background, significant changes to the code are apparent, hinting at upcoming features.
Developer Aaron Perris has discovered new clues to additional AI integrations deep within the software. These code fragments suggest that Apple is already preparing internal structures to integrate additional AI models directly into iOS—similar to what has already happened with ChatGPT.
The discovery aligns with previous statements by Craig Federighi, Apple's Senior Vice President of Software Engineering. When iOS 18 was unveiled in June 2024, Federighi stated that support for Google Gemini was being considered in the future. However, so far, ChatGPT has remained the only external AI service option.
What the new integrations could mean
If the code changes prove to be true, Apple could soon offer a system that supports multiple AI services in parallel. Users could then choose between different models, such as ChatGPT and Google Gemini, depending on their preferences. This would not only provide more flexibility but also cover different application areas: While ChatGPT is known for creative texts and conversations, Gemini excels at analytics and search integration.
This would be a strategically smart move for Apple. Instead of relying exclusively on its own technology, the company would create an open but controlled AI ecosystem. Third-party AIs could be integrated into Siri, Notes, Mail, or other system areas without users having to launch separate apps.
Schedule and possible publication
It's currently unclear whether the new AI integrations will be included in the final version of iOS 26.1. It's possible that Apple will lay the groundwork in this version, but the actual release won't come until a later update like iOS 26.2 or a later version. This would also explain why there's currently no public way to test the new features.
Classification in the context of Apple Intelligence
The potential extensions fit well with the existing "Apple Intelligence" features, which have been gradually expanded since the launch of iOS 18. Apple combines local on-device AI processing with cloud-based models to balance data protection and performance. Opening up to third-party AI would usefully complement this strategy—with the possibility of using specialized models for specific tasks.
iOS 26.1 lays the foundation for the AI future
iOS 26.1 likely marks more than just a regular software update. The subtle changes in the third beta version are clearly preparations for a new phase of AI usage on iOS. The ChatGPT integration was just the beginning—other AI services like Google Gemini could soon follow. Exactly when Apple will unlock the new features remains to be seen, but the groundwork has been laid.
With iOS 26.1, Apple could take the decisive step toward a more open, versatile AI system—and thus demonstrate that artificial intelligence has long been more than just a feature in the Apple universe. (Image: Shutterstock / ImageFlow)
