References to a previously unreleased Apple product have surfaced in the latest beta version of iOS 26. It's the AirTags 2 – a possible second generation of the popular Bluetooth trackers. The system code provides some interesting details, although Apple hasn't made an official announcement yet.
The first AirTags were released in April 2021 and haven't been updated since. Nevertheless, they have become an established part of many users' everyday lives – for example, for tracking keys, bags, or pets. There have been repeated rumors about a new model. Now, for the first time, there are concrete clues, directly in the code of iOS 26. The discovery comes from MacWorld , which analyzed corresponding clues in the beta version.
Code contains clues to new AirTags
The iOS 26 code reveals changes to AirTag management. These relate to Bluetooth communication between AirTags and Apple devices. While the new generation isn't mentioned by name, the nature of the changes clearly indicates that Apple is working on a successor. Another part of the code contains references to the battery. This doesn't directly mention AirTags 2, but it does mention features related to power management. This suggests that Apple is working on improved battery life.
Improvements in location and range
One of the biggest expected innovations concerns location tracking. According to several reports, Apple will be using an improved ultra-wideband chip. Currently, precise location tracking works up to a distance of about 30 meters. With the new chip, the range could increase to up to 90 meters. This would significantly expand the possible uses of AirTags, especially in large buildings or outdoors. The volume of the built-in speaker is also expected to be increased. The current version is functional, but is often difficult to hear in ambient noise. A louder version could make tracking easier without having to rely solely on the app.
Design will probably remain the same
The design of the AirTags is unlikely to change. The current shape—a round, compact button—will likely remain. While there are third-party trackers in credit card format that are also compatible with Apple's Find My network, Apple appears to be focusing on the tried-and-tested format for its own device.

AirTags 2 could be released in 2025 – this is what is known so far
The hints in iOS 26 suggest that Apple is working on a second generation of AirTags. While there's no official confirmation yet, the changes to the system code leave little doubt. Users can likely look forward to improved tracking, greater range, longer battery life, and louder sounds. The form factor is expected to remain unchanged. A release could take place sometime in 2025. iOS 26 therefore not only delivers new software features but also clear indications of upcoming hardware. Anyone who uses AirTags or plans to buy one should keep a close eye on further developments. (Image: Shutterstock / Tada Images)
