iOS 26.5 Beta 1 is now available to developers as a new pre-release version of Apple's mobile operating system. While it doesn't include any major new features, the update brings a number of changes that are both functionally and strategically relevant. The focus is primarily on adjustments for the European market, improvements to existing features, and initial hints at future developments.

Compared to previous versions, iOS 26.5 initially appears understated. It lacks striking new features such as enhanced Siri functionality. Instead, it demonstrates that Apple is focusing on infrastructure, interoperability, and monetization. These changes are particularly significant in the context of regulatory requirements in the EU and increasing competition in the messaging and service sectors.

Suggested places in Apple Maps

iOS 26.5 introduces a new feature called "Suggested Places" in the Maps app. This feature recommends locations based on two factors:

  • Popular places in the surrounding area
  • My own search history

This feature is designed to make using the maps app more personal and efficient. At the same time, it serves as the basis for another new feature.

Advertising in the Maps App

With iOS 26.5, Apple is preparing to introduce advertising in the Maps app. Businesses will soon be able to book ads that:

  • appear in the search results
  • visible in the "Suggested Locations" section

The code found in the system describes how ads are displayed based on the following data:

  • approximate location
  • current search terms
  • the map view during use

All advertisements must be clearly marked as "advertisement". The introduction of this advertising feature is planned for the summer.

RCS end-to-end encryption

A key change concerns the Messages app. In iOS 26.5, end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for RCS messages is re-enabled. This means:

  • Communication between iPhone and Android users is encrypted.
  • The content is not readable by third parties.
  • The function is enabled by default.
  • There is a switch in the settings for control.

The feature was already present in an earlier beta of iOS 26.4, but was not included in the final version.

Changes for third-party wearables in the EU

As part of the Digital Markets Act, iOS 26.5 expands support for third-party devices within the European Union. Apple has already tested similar features in previous beta versions; the main new aspect is the integration of Live Activities.

Coupling by approach

Accessories such as earphones will be easier to connect in the future:

  • Bring the device close to an iPhone or iPad.
  • Start pairing with a single tap

This eliminates most of the previous manual steps.

Notifications on third-party devices

Third-party wearables gain access to iPhone notifications:

  • Viewing and interacting with notifications is possible.
  • Choice between individual apps or all apps

One limitation is that notifications can only be sent to one device at a time. If a third-party device is activated, notifications on an Apple Watch are disabled.

Live activities

New in iOS 26.5 is the ability to sync live activity with third-party wearables. This activity is transmitted similarly to traditional notifications and updated in real time.

A specific release date for these features has not yet been set. Apple had already tested similar features in iOS 26.3 and iOS 26.4 and removed them before the final release.

Improvements to Magic accessories

A minor but practical change concerns accessories like the Magic Keyboard. When such a device is connected to the iPhone via USB-C, the system automatically establishes a Bluetooth connection. This eliminates the need for separate manual pairing.

Data transfer from iPhone to Android

For switching from iOS to Android, iOS 26.5 introduces a new setting. This setting allows you to specify which message attachments should be transferred:

  • All attachments
  • Attachments from the last 12 months
  • Attachments from the last 30 days

This enables more targeted and efficient data transmission.

New features in Apple Books

The Apple Books app contains hints of new awards. These appear to be intended for year-end reviews and could summarize usage statistics or reading behavior.

New keyboard layout

iOS 26.5 introduces an additional keyboard layout for the Inuktitut language. With this, Apple expands language support and improves accessibility for additional user groups.

iOS 26.5 focuses on targeted improvements

iOS 26.5 doesn't bring any major, immediately visible innovations, but it addresses important areas. In particular, the planned integration of advertising into Apple Maps, the return of RCS end-to-end encryption, and the expanded capabilities for third-party wearables demonstrate that Apple is responding to both regulatory requirements and technological developments.

Overall, this update stands out less for its new features and more for its strategic shifts and targeted improvements in the details. The best products for you: Our Amazon storefront offers a wide selection of accessories, including those for HomeKit. (Image: Apple)
