Apple has enabled end-to-end encryption for Safari bookmarks in iCloud, thereby increasing privacy and data protection for users.

On Reddit An update of the Apple website "iCloud Security Overview," which indicates that in addition to Safari tabs and history, Safari bookmarks are now end-to-end encrypted. In other words, no one, not even Apple, can access users' saved Safari bookmarks anymore. Judging by the timing of the update, Apple likely made this change in conjunction with the release of iOS 15 and iPadOS 15. While Safari bookmarks now have end-to-end encryption, iCloud backups are still left out. For example, they are only protected with 128-bit AES encryption, as are photos, reminders, notes, and more. While there has been increasing pressure on Apple in recent years to fully encrypt iCloud Photos and iCloud backups, the company has not yet made this adjustment.

End-to-end encryption: FBI puts pressure on Apple

At the beginning of last year, it was even discussed reported, according to which Apple was actually working on end-to-end encryption for iCloud backups. But according to insiders, the company has apparently given up working on this function after the FBI put pressure on the company. This means that iCloud backups on Apple's servers are currently not encrypted throughout. This means that Apple can decrypt the backup itself in order to release the contents if a law enforcement agency requests it. If you don't want that, you have to do without iCloud backups and back up your data on your PC/Mac. These backups can be fully encrypted by the user without third parties being able to access them. But: If the password is lost, the data is also history. (Photo by Murrstock / Bigstockphoto)
