A MacBook Pro with a 5G modem has been suspected several times, but never confirmed. Since 2019, there have been repeated reports and speculations about such a device. For a long time, clear evidence was lacking, but now a beta version of macOS Tahoe provides the first concrete clues. It contains code references showing that Apple is testing a MacBook Pro with an integrated cellular modem. This could finally bring a feature that many users have long awaited.

Apple has made great strides in developing its own hardware in recent years. From the M1 to the M4 chips, key components of the MacBook Pro were developed entirely in-house. Apple has also designed its own cellular modems, which were first used in the iPhone 16e. Now, there are strong indications that this technology will also make its way to the MacBook Pro—in the form of a 5G modem, first discovered in the macOS Tahoe code.

Code discovery in macOS Tahoe shows 5G test device

According to a report from MacWorld, a beta version of macOS Tahoe contains internal references to a MacBook Pro with 5G capability. This device features the company's proprietary C1 modem, which was previously used in the iPhone 16e. The C1 doesn't support mmWave 5G, but still offers greater efficiency and better performance than previous mmWave modems. It also performs better in practical tests than the previous mmWave modem in the iPhone 16. The report also mentions that the tested MacBook Pro is equipped with an M5 Pro processor. Apple has not yet officially announced this chip. The fact that it has already appeared in connection with 5G modem tests suggests that Apple is internally preparing for the next generation of MacBook Pro.

Uncertainty about the modem type: C1 or C2

Interestingly, the code also contains references to a C2 modem. This has the model ID C4020 and follows the C1 with the ID C4000. Why Apple continues to use the older C1 modem in the tested MacBook Pro and not the more modern C2 remains unclear. It is likely that the C2 modem is initially intended for future iPhones. Nevertheless, the discovery of the C1 modem in connection with the MacBook Pro is considered the first concrete indication that Apple is internally testing a 5G-capable MacBook. Until now, there have only been rumors.

Apple relies on in-house development – including the modem

Apple's move to developing its own 5G modems is an important step toward independence. Until now, the company has relied on third-party suppliers like Qualcomm. Control over modem design allows for better optimization of performance, energy efficiency, and system integration. A power-efficient and fast 5G modem would be a clear advantage, especially for users who rely on constant connectivity and long battery life, especially for the MacBook Pro, which is often used on the go.

No official announcement yet

Despite the clues in the code, there has been no official confirmation from Apple yet that a 5G MacBook Pro is planned. Concrete timelines or launch dates are also unknown. However, Apple has indicated in the past that it intends to use its own modems in as many devices as possible in the long term. It stands to reason that the MacBook Pro will be one of them.

Apple tests 5G MacBook Pro with its own hardware

The clues in macOS Tahoe clearly indicate that Apple is working on a 5G-capable MacBook Pro. A model with the company's own C1 modem and a yet-to-be-released M5 Pro chip is apparently being tested. While release details aren't yet known, there's every indication that the 5G MacBook Pro will become an integral part of the future product line. By developing the modem in-house, Apple gains more control over performance, power consumption, and system integration—a crucial step for mobile devices like the MacBook Pro.
