Apple is currently developing a new generation of the Studio Display. Clear references to the project have been discovered in Apple's code, showing that the company is already actively working on the next version. The model is internally codenamed J427 and is rumored to be released in early 2026. Little is known about technical details so far, but there are initial signs of exciting innovations.
Apple hasn't released a new display since the launch of the original Studio Display in 2022. The company has deliberately taken its time in this segment and now appears to be working on a model that could represent a significant step forward both technically and visually. The planned release would coincide with the expected launch of new Macs with the M5 chip, suggesting close coordination between hardware and software.
Notes from the code
MacRumors contributor Aaron Perris has found hidden references to the codename J427 in Apple's software code. These types of internal clues typically only appear when a product is in active testing. Apple itself hasn't released any official information on this, but the discovery clearly indicates that development is already well underway.
Possible mini-LED technology
The Studio Display 2 is expected to feature a mini-LED backlight. This technology enables higher peak brightness, a significantly improved contrast ratio, and more precise color reproduction. This could be a significant advantage, especially for professional users in photography, video editing, and graphic design.
Second project codenamed J527
In addition to J427, references to another model codenamed J527 were discovered in the code. It's still unclear what this is. Industry insiders like Bloomberg's Mark Gurman believe it's possible that Apple is developing two versions of the Studio Display and will later decide on one. Another possibility is that J527 is a new version of the Pro Display XDR. However, Gurman believes that a second-generation Pro Display XDR isn't currently a high priority for Apple.
Schedule and possible presentation
The planned market launch of the new display is estimated for early 2026. New Macs with the M5 chip are also expected to be released at this time. Whether the new model will actually be called the Studio Display 2 or will be launched under a new name remains to be seen. What is clear, however, is that Apple hasn't introduced a new display model since 2022, and the upcoming device could represent one of the biggest innovations in its hardware portfolio in recent years.
A look at Apple's next display generation
With the Studio Display 2, Apple could launch a significantly more powerful and visually enhanced model. The potential advantages of mini-LED technology and the parallel development of new Macs suggest that Apple is deliberately focusing on a strong overall package. Whether the J527 will be an alternative display or a completely different product remains exciting. The only thing that is certain is that 2026 is likely to be an important date for Apple's display division. (Image: Shutterstock / Noah Sauve)
