The HomePod mini is about to get a major upgrade. Apple is working on a new version of the compact speaker that will feature a significantly more powerful processor, modern wireless technology, and possibly new color options. References in Apple code confirm that the new generation is in development and will utilize chip technology already used in the latest Apple Watch models.
The current HomePod mini uses the S5 chip, originally developed for the Apple Watch. The next generation has the internal codename B525 and, according to discovered code lines, will use a processor with the T8310 microarchitecture. This architecture is already found in the S9 and S10 chips of the Apple Watch Series 9 and Series 10 and is expected to also be installed in the upcoming S11 chips of the Apple Watch Series 11 and the Apple Watch Ultra 3. This means that the new HomePod mini should not only be faster but also technically up to date.
New chip with significantly more performance
The expected S11 chip is based on the A16 architecture, which is also used in iPhones. It features a 64-bit dual-core processor and a quad-core Neural Engine. Compared to the previous S5 chip, this represents a massive performance increase. Voice commands should be processed faster, and even more complex functions should be able to run without lag. Whether Apple will ultimately call the chip S9, S10, or S11 has not yet been confirmed.
Improved connectivity with Wi-Fi 6E
In addition to computing power, connectivity technology is also being modernized. A new combination chip for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth developed by Apple is expected to support Wi-Fi 6E. This standard ensures more stable connections, less interference, and faster speeds—especially in households with many connected devices.
Design and possible color variants
There's no official information on the design yet. However, rumors suggest that the HomePod mini could be released in additional colors. The current generation is already available in several color variants, and an expanded range would visually refresh the model.
Market launch towards the end of 2025
The new version is expected to be unveiled between September and December 2025. This fits with Apple's usual schedule of unveiling new hardware in the fall. By then, more details are likely to leak out, painting a clearer picture of the upcoming model.
Significantly more power and modern technology in the new HomePod mini
The next HomePod mini will be a noticeable upgrade. A faster processor, a more powerful Neural Engine, and modern wireless standards like Wi-Fi 6E make the compact speaker future-proof. Adding new color options could make the device both technically and visually impressive. The upgrade from the S5 to the new chip brings significant advantages and should make the HomePod mini even more attractive for many households. (Image: Shutterstock / photoschmidt)
