Apple TV is further expanding its sci-fi portfolio while simultaneously drawing a clear line: The award-winning series "For All Mankind" will end with a sixth season. Even before the fifth season premiered, it was confirmed that the story would reach its planned conclusion. This marks the beginning of the final phase for one of Apple TV's most important original productions.

Since the launch of Apple TV on November 1, 2019, "For All Mankind" has been one of the streaming service's core series. The production was part of the original lineup and has established itself as a mainstay over the years.

The series was recognized worldwide by critics as a high-quality science fiction production and received numerous awards. These include Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards and Producers Guild of America Awards, as well as Critics' Choice Award nominations.

In parallel, Apple TV has positioned itself as a streaming platform with a focus on original productions. The service launched exclusively with original content and quickly garnered a large number of awards. Apple productions have now received over 773 awards and more than 3,347 nominations.

Season 5: Start date and release schedule

The fifth season of "For All Mankind" premieres on Friday, March 27, on Apple TV. A first episode will be released, followed by a new episode every week.

The season comprises a total of ten episodes. The season finale is scheduled for May 29th.

On the same day, the new spin-off "Star City" will also launch, expanding the series universe and running parallel to the main series.

Content of the fifth season

The story begins in the 2010s and takes place several years after the events surrounding the Goldilocks asteroid.

The focus remains on the Mars colony "Happy Valley." It has since developed into a large and functioning settlement with thousands of inhabitants. It serves as a base for new missions that will extend beyond Mars into the solar system.

As the colony grows, political and social tensions also increase. Earth's nations attempt to impose control and legal order on Mars. At the same time, the planet's inhabitants increasingly develop their own interests. This creates a conflict between the Martian population and their original home on Earth.

  • Mireille Enos (The Killing, Hanna)
  • Costa Ronin (The Americans, Homeland)
  • Sean Kaufman (The Summer I Turned Pretty)
  • Ruby Cruz (Bottoms)
  • Ines Asserson (Royalteen)

This expansion of the cast suggests new storylines and perspectives within the series.

Production and those responsible

"For All Mankind" was developed by Ronald D. Moore, Matt Wolpert and Ben Nedivi.

Wolpert and Nedivi serve as showrunners and executive producers. Other executive producers include Ronald D. Moore and Maril Davis (Tall Ship Productions), as well as Kira Snyder, David Weddle, Bradley Thompson, and Seth Edelstein.

The series is produced by Sony Pictures Television for Apple TV.

The sixth season as the planned finale

Apple TV has confirmed that "For All Mankind" will conclude with a sixth season. Production on this final season is about to begin.

The showrunners emphasize that the series will end as originally planned. The story is intended to have a complete conclusion after six seasons.

Apple TV also considers the series a long-term success. It is one of the service's longest-running and most-watched productions.

Meaning for Apple TV

"For All Mankind" is an example of Apple TV’s strategy of focusing on high-quality content planned for the long term.

Since its launch, the streaming service has focused exclusively on original productions and has thus quickly gained attention. Besides "For All Mankind," well-known titles include series such as "Ted Lasso" and "Severance," as well as films like "CODA" and "F1."

Apple TV offers a wide range of content, including drama and comedy series, feature films, documentaries, and programs for children and families. The content is available on various devices.

For All Mankind is approaching its conclusion

With the announcement of the sixth and final season, "For All Mankind" enters its decisive phase. The fifth season serves as the prelude to the finale, while the spin-off "Star City" expands the universe.

Apple TV is thus bringing one of its most important series to a planned conclusion, while simultaneously strengthening its profile as a provider of high-quality original productions. (Image: Apple)
