Apple launches new mini-apps program for developers

Apple is introducing the App Store Mini Apps Partner Program, opening up a new model for developers who offer mini-apps and mini-games within a native app. The company is responding to a growing segment, already well-established in Asia, and is creating, for the first time, an official framework for mini-apps within the Apple ecosystem. The update brings new monetization opportunities, clear guidelines, and technical requirements designed to make mini-apps more secure and easier to integrate.

Mini-apps are gaining importance because they deliver fast, lightweight experiences without the need to develop a full-fledged app. Apple is now adapting its App Store structure to allow for the seamless integration of these models. This provides developers with a standardized solution that offers both business advantages and technical clarity. The App Store Mini Apps Partner Program marks Apple's next step in creating more flexibility while maintaining control over security, monetization, and age ratings.

What Apple is starting with the Mini Apps Partner Program

Apple defines mini-apps as self-contained experiences implemented using web technologies such as HTML5 and JavaScript. They run within a native host app and represent small modules, games, or tools. With the new program, such mini-apps can, for the first time, be monetized through in-app purchases. Apple is thus integrating them directly into the existing App Store infrastructure.

The goal is clear: to make mini-apps more readily available, while enabling developers to use a consistent business model. At the same time, the familiar App Store quality is maintained, as Apple continues to rely on tested technologies and guidelines.

Benefits through reduced commission

A key advantage for participating developers is the reduced commission of 15 percent on qualifying in-app purchases. This requires support for certain App Store technologies mandated by Apple. One such technology is the Declared Age Range API, which filters content based on verified or stated age. This ensures that mini-apps do not display content that exceeds the age rating.

Additionally, the Advanced Commerce API must be integrated. This guarantees a smooth and secure payment process within the mini-apps and ensures that transactions remain cleanly embedded in the Apple Commerce system.

Requirements for mini-apps and host apps

Apple clarifies that the mini-apps themselves must not be controlled by the developer of the host app. The structure is intended to be reserved for genuine third-party developers. Mini-apps thus serve as external modules that are integrated into the offering of an existing app.

To participate in the Mini Apps Partner Program, an application must be submitted. Apple reviews the host app, its technical specifications, and the implementation of the required APIs before granting the benefits.

Possible connection to the Tencent deal

The announcement appears to be an international expansion of the model Apple already introduced as part of its new agreement with Tencent. WeChat, one of the world's largest super apps, contains numerous mini-games and mini-apps. The new agreement allows Apple to collect commissions on revenue generated within these mini-apps. The new partner program suggests that Apple intends to extend this model to more developers and regions.

Updated App Review Guidelines

Alongside the launch of the program, Apple has expanded its App Store guidelines. The new rule is particularly relevant for creator apps. They must now include features that identify content exceeding the app's age rating. Furthermore, creator apps must use a mechanism to restrict access to such content based on the stated or verified age. The focus is clearly on a safe environment for younger users and transparent content control.

Apple creates clear rules and opportunities for mini-apps.

The App Store Mini Apps Partner Program demonstrates Apple's intention to make mini-apps a core component of the App Store ecosystem. Developers gain new monetization opportunities, reduced commissions, and a clearly defined technical framework. Simultaneously, Apple strengthens security by making age verification and commerce mechanisms mandatory. With this launch, mini-app technology moves into sharper global focus and becomes a structured, officially supported part of Apple's strategy. (Image: Apple)
