Apple Home: Final deadline for upgrades

Apple is increasing the pressure on users of its Home app. In a recent email, Apple reiterates that a long-announced upgrade is now unavoidable. Those who don't install the new Apple Home architecture risk significant limitations in their smart home – up to and including the complete loss of access via the app.

Back in 2022, Apple introduced a new architecture for Apple Home. It was designed to make the smart home system more reliable, efficient, and future-proof. Since then, there have effectively been two versions of the Home app. Now, Apple is making it clear that the old architecture is being phased out. This latest reminder serves as a final warning before the end date.

Apple sets a clear deadline for the Home upgrade

Apple is urging users to update the Home app by February 10, 2026. Failure to perform this upgrade could result in various problems, according to Apple. These include malfunctions with smart home accessories, automations no longer working, or even the complete loss of access to one's smart home within the app.

Apple emphasizes that this is not an optional update. The old Home architecture will no longer be supported.

These problems are likely to occur without an update

Those who do not install the new Apple Home architecture must expect several specific limitations:

  • Accessories may become inaccessible or malfunction.
  • Automations run unreliably or are no longer executed at all.
  • Access to the smart home via the Home app can be completely eliminated.
  • No new features are available.
  • Security fixes and performance improvements will no longer be delivered.

Apple explicitly points out that security-related updates will only be provided via the new architecture.

New features only available with the latest Apple Home version

Without the upgrade, newer features will also be unavailable. Apple specifically mentions support for robot vacuum cleaners, which is only available with the new Home architecture. Future Apple Home expansions will also require the updated version. The old architecture will no longer be functionally developed.

Here's how to update the Apple Home app

Apple describes the upgrade process identically for iPhone, iPad and Mac:

  • Open the Home app
  • Tap or click on the three dots in the upper right corner.
  • Switch to Home settings
  • Select software update
  • Tap or click "Update now" and follow the instructions.

All existing homes will be updated automatically at the same time. If the message "This home and all accessories are up to date" appears, the latest version is already installed and no action is required.

These system versions are required

The new Apple Home architecture requires certain minimum versions of the operating systems:

  • iOS 16.2 or later
  • iPadOS 16.2 or later
  • macOS 13.1 or later
  • tvOS 16.2 or later
  • watchOS 9.2 or later

Without these versions, the Home upgrade cannot be performed.

Apple Home will exclusively use the new architecture going forward

Apple has made it unequivocally clear that the future of Apple Home is based exclusively on the new architecture. The upgrade is a prerequisite for stability, security, and access to new features. Those who meet the deadline of February 10, 2026, will avoid any loss of functionality and ensure that their smart home remains fully usable via Apple Home.
