Anthropic is currently attracting attention not only technologically, but also politically. Its AI chatbot, Claude, has reached number two among free apps in Apple's US App Store. Simultaneously, at the time of this article's publication, the app has reached number four in the German App Store. This rise coincides with a period of tense negotiations between Anthropic and the US Department of Defense. The public debate appears to have significantly increased the company's visibility.
Anthropic is developing Claude, an AI chatbot that directly competes with OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google Gemini. In a highly competitive market for AI applications, media attention can be crucial, and this is clearly evident right now.
While Anthropic attempted to negotiate safeguards for the use of its AI models with the Pentagon, a political controversy developed. This not only led to official instructions from Washington, but also apparently to increased download numbers.
Claude climbs significantly in the rankings
As CNBC first reported, Claude has been ranked second among free apps in Apple's US App Store since Saturday afternoon. ChatGPT by OpenAI remains in first place, followed by Google Gemini in third.
Strong growth is also evident outside the USA: At the time of publication of this article, Claude ranks fourth among free apps in the German App Store.
A look at the previous weeks illustrates the dynamics. According to data from SensorTower, Claude was just outside the top 100 free apps at the end of January. The app spent most of February in the top 20. In recent days, its rise has accelerated significantly.

- Thursday: 4th place
- Saturday: 2nd place
The rapid increase shows how sensitive the market for AI apps is to external events.
The dispute between Anthropic and the Pentagon
The current attention stems from a conflict between Anthropic and the US Department of Defense. Anthropic attempted to negotiate safeguards to prevent its AI models from being used for certain purposes. Two particularly sensitive areas were at the heart of the dispute:
- Mass surveillance within the country
- Fully autonomous weapon systems
Anthropic wanted to ensure that its models were not used for these applications. However, the negotiations led to political tensions.
As a result, President Donald Trump instructed federal agencies to cease using all Anthropic products. Additionally, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated that he considered Anthropic a threat to the supply chain. This assessment further exacerbated the situation.
OpenAI responds with its own agreement
In parallel, OpenAI announced its own agreement with the Pentagon. According to CEO Sam Altman, this agreement also includes safeguards regarding domestic mass surveillance and autonomous weapons.
While Anthropic attempted to impose restrictive conditions, OpenAI signaled its willingness to cooperate with the Department of Defense. This made the difference in the strategic direction of the two AI companies publicly apparent.
Why Anthropic benefits from the controversy
Claude's sharp rise in popularity in the US App Store coincides with the political controversy. Media coverage of Anthropic and the debate surrounding ethical guidelines for the use of AI have significantly increased the company's visibility.
In a market where trust and transparency play a crucial role, clear positioning can be effective. The current success in the app store rankings suggests that Anthropic is benefiting from the increased attention.
Anthropic gains market share in the shadow of politics
Anthropic is currently experiencing a period of high visibility. While the company is embroiled in a political conflict with the Pentagon, Claude has reached number two among free apps in the US App Store and number four in the German App Store.
From a position outside the top 100 at the end of January, through places in the top 20 in February, to its current top ranking within just a few days, a clear dynamic is evident. At the same time, Anthropic is at the center of a debate about the military use of AI.
Whether this success will be sustained in the long term remains to be seen. However, one thing is clear: Anthropic has once again significantly moved to the forefront of the competition with ChatGPT and Google Gemini. (Image: Shutterstock / Tada Images)
