The AirPods Pro 3 are here, bringing with them technical innovations designed to improve sound quality, noise cancellation, and comfort. Apple has revised the familiar fit test, developed new ear tips, and integrated a heart rate sensor. This makes the third generation significantly different from its predecessors.

The AirPods Pro 1 and AirPods Pro 2 already offered active noise cancellation and an eartip fit test. With the AirPods Pro 3, Apple goes a step further: The new Acoustic Seal Test measures the seal in the ear to optimize sound quality and ANC. It also offers softer eartips in five sizes and the ability to measure heart rate directly on the ear.

The acoustic sealing test

Apple is replacing the previous fit test with the so-called Acoustic Seal Test. This test uses acoustic signals to check the fit of the earbuds and ensure that they form a proper seal. A good seal is crucial for sound quality and the effectiveness of noise cancellation. Apple recommends starting with the medium-sized earbuds. If you don't achieve a sufficient seal, you can try larger tips. If the earbuds feel too large, smaller sizes are better.

New earplugs in five sizes

With the AirPods Pro 3, Apple is introducing new ear tips made of foam-infused silicone. This material is softer and less stiff than the previous generation. This improves comfort while also optimizing the seal. The ear tips are now available in five sizes: XXS, XS, S, M, and L. The new XXS size is designed to provide a better fit, especially for people with particularly small ear canals.

Heart rate measurement at the ear

Another new feature is heart rate measurement. For the sensor to provide accurate readings, the AirPods Pro 3 must be in direct contact with the skin. Apple notes that the ideal eartip size for heart rate measurement may differ from that for acoustic sealing. Proper positioning also plays a role. The AirPods Pro 3 should be worn at an angle of approximately 45 degrees to the face, so that the heart rate sensor rests directly against the ear. If measurements appear inaccurate or inconsistent, Apple recommends testing a different eartip size.

How to start the acoustic sealing test

The test can be easily started via an iPhone with iOS 26 or an iPad with iPadOS 26. After connecting the AirPods Pro 3, you can access the options in the settings and select the Acoustic Seal Test. This checks whether the earbuds achieve the desired seal and whether ANC is functioning optimally.

AirPods Pro 3: the interplay of sound and sensors

The AirPods Pro 3 combine technical innovations with practical improvements. The new acoustic seal test ensures a precise fit, the softer ear tips offer greater comfort, and the expanded size selection increases flexibility. Added to this is the ability to measure heart rate directly through the earbuds. With this, Apple is launching a generation that meaningfully combines sound quality, comfort, and health features.
