M5 MacBook Air in detail: performance, design and appearance

The M5 MacBook Air is already the focus of many Apple fans, even though the M4 model was released only a few months ago. The Air has been Apple's most successful laptop for years, known for its slim design, fanless operation, and the efficiency of Apple Silicon. With the M5 processor, the next generation is approaching, and expectations are focused on performance, battery life, and potential design innovations.

Since switching to its own chips, Apple has developed a clear cadence for the MacBook Air line. While major design changes only occur every few years, annual chip updates bring steady performance improvements. The M5 MacBook Air will continue this trend and launch in spring 2026. The details are already quite clear from Apple's release cycles, known processor information, and leaked benchmarks.

release date and price

The M5 MacBook Air is expected to be released in March 2026. Apple has now established an almost fixed annual release schedule for the MacBook Air: After the redesigned M2 model in 2022, there was no update in 2023, but the M3 and M4 versions followed in 2024 and 2025 – both in March. Industry insiders like Bloomberg's Mark Gurman confirm this timeframe for the M5. The starting price is likely to remain unchanged. The base model of the MacBook Air traditionally starts at around $999, and there are no signs that Apple will change that in the short term.

Processor upgrade

The M5 chip will be the most important innovation. It is based on TSMC's 3-nanometer technology and relies on an improved ARM architecture. The jump to 2 nanometers, which TSMC is already preparing, is currently postponed for cost reasons. Benchmarks of an iPad Pro with the M5 chip provide a good overview of performance:

  • Single-core value at around 4,133 points
  • Multi-core value at around 15,437 points

This represents an increase of approximately 12 to 15 percent over the M4. The increase in graphics performance is particularly significant: The M5's GPU is said to be up to 36 percent faster. Apple is focusing on targeted clock speed increases and improved efficiency rather than a complete redesign of the architecture.

  • The result: faster response times for everyday tasks, even longer battery life, and a more powerful GPU for graphics-intensive applications. The difference compared to the M4 is noticeable, but not revolutionary—comparable to the transition from the M3 to the M4.

display and design

The external appearance of the M5 MacBook Air will remain largely unchanged. The current design dates back to 2022, making it only three years old and still modern. The familiar 13- and 15-inch sizes will remain, as will the fanless aluminum unibody chassis. Continuity is also expected in the display: OLED will initially be reserved for the MacBook Pro models, which are expected to be equipped with it starting in 2026 or 2027. Minor adjustments are conceivable, however. These include an improved webcam, support for Wi-Fi 7 or Bluetooth LE audio, and possibly new color options, as Apple introduced with the M4.

A Look into the Future

While the M5 MacBook Air is planned for 2026, information about later models is already available. A MacBook Air with oxide TFT displays is scheduled for release in 2027. This display technology is more energy-efficient and performs better than current amorphous silicon panels. It promises sharper images, more consistent brightness, faster response times, and less motion blur—a clear step forward in image quality and battery life.

M5 MacBook Air: More speed without a major redesign

The M5 MacBook Air will be released in March 2026 and will feature a new processor that's approximately 12 to 15 percent faster than its predecessor and offers up to 36 percent more graphics performance. The design will remain largely unchanged, but minor improvements to the camera, connectivity, and color options are likely. Pricing remains the same, starting at $999. The major change in the display will come later, with the switch to oxide TFT technology in 2027. Until then, the M5 MacBook Air will remain a classic update: faster, more efficient, and more durable—a solid step forward without a radical overhaul.
