The AirPods Max 2 have been officially unveiled and are now available for pre-order. Apple is expanding its portfolio in the premium headphone segment with this update, which focuses primarily on what's under the hood. The emphasis is clearly on new technology, improved audio features, and tighter integration into the Apple ecosystem.
With the AirPods Max 2, Apple maintains a consistent design while incorporating targeted technical improvements. While the external appearance remains largely unchanged, the new chip makes a noticeable difference in everyday use. The second generation is therefore aimed primarily at users who value modern audio features and improved noise processing.
Pre-order and availability
The AirPods Max 2 were surprisingly announced by Apple on March 16th. Shortly after the announcement, Apple opened pre-orders.
- Pre-orders are now possible.
- Official sales launch: April 1st
Both Apple itself and retailers like Amazon specify these delivery times, meaning Apple is keeping to the originally announced availability of "early next month".
Design and connection
Apple remains true to its established design principles. The AirPods Max 2 look almost identical to the previously released USB-C version of the first generation. Key features:
- Same over-ear design with high-quality materials
- USB-C port for charging and wired use
- No more Lightning connector, as used in the original version.
This allows the headphones to adapt to current Apple devices such as the iPhone 15 and newer models.
New color options
Apple offers the AirPods Max 2 in several color variations:
- Midnight
- Starlight
- Orange
- Purple
- Blue
This color palette reflects Apple's modern design language and expands the selection compared to previous versions.
H2 chip as the key innovation
The most important technical change in the AirPods Max 2 is the integrated H2 chip. This chip is already used in newer Apple products such as the AirPods Pro 3 and AirPods 4.
The H2 chip results in several concrete improvements:
- Improved active noise cancellation (ANC)
- Improved sound quality
- Adaptive audio that dynamically takes ambient noise into account.
- Live translation in real time
These functions are closely linked to the chip via software and represent the biggest difference compared to the previous AirPods Max.
Differences from its predecessors
The AirPods Max 2 differ from the first two versions primarily in their internal technology.
- First generation: Lightning connector, no H2 chip
- USB-C version: new connector, but still without the H2 chip
- AirPods Max 2: USB-C + H2 chip + new audio features
Visually, however, there are hardly any changes. The focus is clearly on performance and software.
Price and additional options
Apple's price remains unchanged:
- 579 euros for the AirPods Max 2
Additional options when buying:
- Free engraving when ordering through Apple
- AppleCare+: 59 euros per year
This ensures the product remains clearly positioned in the premium segment.

AirPods Max 2: Focus on technology rather than new design
The AirPods Max 2 represent a targeted upgrade, with Apple deliberately avoiding major design changes. Instead, the focus is on technical improvements, most notably the H2 chip and its associated audio features.
With pre-orders now open and shipping starting in early April, the AirPods Max 2 are positioning themselves as the current top model in Apple's headphone lineup. Those who value modern features and optimized audio processing will find this to be the most technically advanced version of the AirPods Max to date. (Image: Apple)
