Apple Maps is about to undergo a major change. The maps app will soon include advertising, a significant departure from its current largely ad-free user experience. According to recent reports, the official announcement could be made very soon.
Apple has been working for some time to monetize its services more effectively. While advertising in the App Store has long been established, Apple Maps has remained untouched. However, there have been hints of such plans for a while now. Now, implementation appears to be taking concrete form.
Advertising in Apple Maps: Here's what's planned
According to Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, Apple is actively preparing to introduce advertising in Apple Maps. This move is part of a larger strategy to increase revenue from services. An announcement could come later this month.
The system's functionality is based on existing models. Companies will be able to pay for specific keywords to appear higher in search results. Sponsored listings would then be directly visible in the search results and supplement the regular results.
Orientation via Google Maps
The concept isn't new. Apple is apparently taking its cue from Google Maps, where advertising is already an integral part. There, too, companies can bid on ad space to increase their visibility in relevant search queries.
Launch expected this summer
The advertising feature is expected to be introduced this summer. The plan is to make it available not only on the iPhone, but also on other Apple devices and in the web version of Apple Maps.
New features with iOS 26
In parallel, Apple Maps received a major update with iOS 26. New features include preferred routes, automatically recorded visited locations, and natural language search powered by Apple Intelligence. The update was generally well-received and demonstrates Apple's continued development of the app.
Apple Maps is focusing more on monetization
With its planned advertising, Apple Maps is taking a new direction. The app will not only be functionally enhanced but also used more commercially. The combination of new features and advertising integration is likely to be crucial in determining Apple Maps' future positioning. (Image: Apple)
