Apple has technically revamped its Studio Displays. Both the Apple Studio Display and the Studio Display XDR now feature 128 GB of internal NAND flash memory. This doubles the capacity compared to the previous generation, which had 64 GB.

In addition, Apple is using new A-series chips. The Apple Studio Display uses the A19 chip, while the more powerful Studio Display XDR is equipped with the A19 Pro. Both displays can therefore handle various tasks directly.

Modern Apple displays are no longer just simple screens. They have their own chips, RAM, and an internal operating system. The Studio Displays run on an iOS-based system.

The internal memory and built-in processors ensure that functions such as camera processing, color calibration or audio processing can be performed directly on the display.

A19 and A19 Pro in the Apple Studio Displays

The Apple Studio Display uses the A19 chip. The Studio Display XDR uses the more powerful A19 Pro.

These chips perform several tasks in the display. These include, among others:

  • Processing of the center-stage camera
  • automatic color calibration
  • Managing USB and Thunderbolt devices
  • Spatial audio calculation
  • internal system processes of the display

Many of these tasks are processed directly on the monitor and do not need to be done by the connected Mac.

128 GB internal storage

Both new Apple Studio Displays have 128 GB of internal NAND storage. However, this storage is not intended for visible user functions.

It is primarily used for the display's internal software. This includes the iOS-based operating system, future firmware updates, and potential diagnostic and system data.

The previous generation had 64 GB of storage. Apple has thus doubled the capacity.

Apple is likely using existing NAND flash memory from the iPhone supply chain. These memory chips are available in large quantities and therefore inexpensive. A significant portion of the 128 GB is unlikely to be fully utilized in everyday use.

RAM of the new displays

In addition to the larger storage capacity, the displays also have integrated RAM.

  • Apple Studio Display: 8GB RAM
  • Studio Display XDR: 12 GB RAM

RAM is needed for internal system processes, such as camera and audio processing or the management of connected devices.

Availability

The new Apple Studio Displays are now available. They can be purchased immediately from the Apple Online Store and in Apple Stores.

The technology behind the new Apple Studio Displays

With the new Studio Displays, Apple is focusing more on internal processing power. A19 and A19 Pro chips, more RAM, and 128 GB of internal storage ensure that many functions are processed directly in the display.

The larger storage capacity is primarily used for system software and future updates. Although it's barely noticeable to users, it forms an important basis for the technology of modern Apple displays. (Image: Apple)
