With the iPhone 17e, Apple expands its portfolio with a new, more affordable model. At the same time, the iPhone 16 remains available. Both devices are among the most attractively priced iPhones, but they differ significantly in their focus. While the iPhone 17e emphasizes performance, storage, and battery life, the iPhone 16 scores points with a more modern design, a brighter display, and a more versatile camera. The question isn't just which device is newer, but which overall package makes more sense for everyday use.

Apple is pursuing different strategies with these two devices. The iPhone 17e costs €699 and is positioned as a powerful entry-level model with modern hardware. The iPhone 16 costs €849 and was originally part of the flagship generation from late 2024, but is now being offered at a reduced entry-level price on Amazon.

On paper, the iPhone 17e impresses with more storage, a newer processor, and longer battery life. The iPhone 16, on the other hand, offers a more modern design, better display specifications, and additional camera features. Both approaches have their merits.

Storage and performance: The iPhone 17e sets clear standards

A significant difference is immediately apparent when looking at storage. The iPhone 17e starts with 256 GB of internal storage. A 512 GB version is available as an option, costing an additional 250 euros. The iPhone 16, on the other hand, starts at 128 GB, even though it costs 150 euros more than the iPhone 17e. This means the newer model offers twice the base storage for a lower price.

The iPhone 17e also comes out on top when it comes to the processor. It uses the new A19 chip, while the iPhone 16 is still equipped with the A18 chip. The newer chip provides higher performance and better future-proofing. It's worth noting that the less expensive device is technically more up-to-date.

In addition, the iPhone 17e features the new C1X modem. This provides an extra privacy feature with the mobile carrier that is not supported by the modem in the iPhone 16. At the same time, the C1X modem contributes to improved energy efficiency.

Battery life and materials: Advantages of the iPhone 17e

The combination of the A19 chip and C1X modem directly impacts battery life. The iPhone 17e achieves up to 26 hours of video playback, while the iPhone 16 manages up to 22 hours. This four-hour difference is noticeable in everyday use, especially when streaming or using the phone for extended periods on the go.

Apple has also opted for a newer generation of glass in the iPhone 17e. Like the iPhone 17, it uses Ceramic Shield 2. This glass offers three times better scratch resistance compared to the iPhone 16 and features improved anti-reflective properties, reducing glare. This makes the iPhone 17e more robust in terms of durability.

Design and display: The iPhone 16 looks more modern

The design changes everything. The iPhone 16 features the so-called Dynamic Island. This design element is also used in Apple's current flagship models. It visibly integrates Live Activities and multitasking functions into the upper part of the display and looks more modern overall.

The iPhone 17e, on the other hand, uses the classic notch, as already used in the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14. Technically, it serves its purpose, but visually it looks less modern.

The iPhone 16 also comes out on top when it comes to the display itself. Its typical brightness is 1000 nits, with a peak HDR brightness of 1600 nits. Outdoors, it even reaches 2000 nits, while the minimum brightness is 1 nit. The iPhone 17e achieves 800 nits of typical brightness and 1200 nits in HDR mode. This gives the iPhone 16 greater flexibility, especially in direct sunlight or very dark environments.

Camera and connectivity: More features on the iPhone 16

Another difference lies in the camera. The iPhone 16 has two rear cameras: a main camera with 1x zoom and an ultra-wide camera with 0.5x zoom. This second camera enables wider image perspectives, macro photography, 3D photography, and video recording in Cinematic mode.

Additionally, the iPhone 16 has its own camera controls, allowing for quick camera launch and photo capture. The iPhone 17e offers neither an ultra-wide camera nor these dedicated camera controls.

The iPhone 16 also offers more wireless connectivity. It supports Wi-Fi 7, while the iPhone 17e uses Wi-Fi 6. Furthermore, the iPhone 16 features a Thread radio module and a second-generation UWB chip, enabling better integration with the new AirTag 2.

Market position and entry prices

The iPhone 17e can be pre-ordered starting Wednesday, March 4th. The official sales launch is one week later on March 11th. Priced at €699, it offers high performance, large storage capacity, and long battery life at a comparatively low entry-level price.

The iPhone 16 remains in the product range for €849. As a former flagship model from late 2024, it continues to offer modern design features, a very bright display, and enhanced camera and wireless capabilities.

iPhone 17e vs. iPhone 16: Performance or Design?

The iPhone 17e impresses above all with its newer A19 chip, double the base storage, longer battery life, the C1X modem with additional data protection features, and the more durable Ceramic Shield 2. At the same time, it is 150 euros cheaper than the iPhone 16.

In contrast, the iPhone 16 offers a more modern design with Dynamic Island, a significantly brighter display, a more versatile camera with ultra-wide and macro functions, and more modern wireless standards such as Wi-Fi 7, Thread, and second-generation UWB.

The decision depends on whether your focus is more on performance, storage, and battery life, or on design, display quality, and camera features.
