WWDC 2026: Apple replaces Core ML with Core AI in iOS 27

Apple is apparently planning a fundamental overhaul of its AI infrastructure. A new framework called Core AI is expected to be unveiled at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), replacing the existing Core ML. The goal is to provide developers with more modern tools for using artificial intelligence on iOS 27. This change isn't just a name change; it represents a strategic realignment in how Apple handles AI within its ecosystem.

The information comes from Mark Gurman, who reports on Apple's plans in his "Power On" newsletter for Bloomberg News. According to Gurman, Apple is working on several software-based AI upgrades. A key component is the new Core AI framework.

Core ML has existed for years as the central interface for machine learning in apps. Now, this framework is to be replaced by a modernized solution. The transition will take place as part of iOS 27 and is expected to be officially unveiled at WWDC in June.

Why Apple is replacing Core ML with Core AI

The switch from "ML" to "AI" was reportedly a conscious choice. "Machine Learning" describes a specific subfield of artificial intelligence. The term now sounds technical and limited. Apple apparently assumes that "machine learning" no longer seems contemporary to developers and consumers.

"Artificial Intelligence," on the other hand, is a broader term encompassing various AI approaches. The renaming of Core ML to Core AI reflects this more modern approach.

Despite the new name, the framework's fundamental purpose remains the same: developers should still be able to integrate external AI models into their apps. However, the technical foundation should be more modern and better suited to current AI requirements.

Meaning for developers on iOS 27

For developers, Core AI is expected to mean greater flexibility in integrating modern AI features. The framework is designed to help integrate external AI models into apps more efficiently.

The advantage is that less in-house infrastructure or third-party tools need to be developed from scratch. Instead of building complex solutions themselves, developers could rely more heavily on Apple's framework.

Although the report doesn't provide technical details, the change suggests that Apple will be paying particular attention to AI in the coming year. WWDC is expected to provide more concrete insights.

Impact on users of the Apple platform

For users of the Apple platform, the renaming reflects a larger trend. Apple is increasingly focusing on modern AI tools designed to enable new and more powerful user experiences.

The integration of modern AI can lead to apps working more intelligently, analyzing content more effectively, or offering context-aware features. While the report doesn't provide specific details on new features, the strategic focus on artificial intelligence is clear. With iOS 27, AI is expected to be even more deeply integrated system-wide.

Connection to iOS 26.5 and Siri

Even before iOS 27 is released, another AI upgrade is expected. According to reports, Apple is planning a major update for Siri and Apple Intelligence with iOS 26.5.

The Gemini AI models from Google are expected to be used. This upgrade is considered long overdue and could already mark a transitional phase before Core AI is officially introduced with iOS 27.

Apple is currently testing iOS 26.4 with developers and public beta testers. Therefore, it's likely that the first beta version of iOS 26.5 will be several weeks away.

WWDC as a central stage for Apple

Apple holds its annual Worldwide Developers Conference in June. There, the company traditionally presents new versions of iOS as well as new frameworks.

WWDC is therefore likely to be the point at which Core AI is officially presented. The coming months will reveal how extensive the changes actually are and how Apple specifically shapes its AI strategy.

Apple is pursuing a new AI strategy with Core AI

Apple is replacing Core ML with Core AI, clearly positioning itself in the field of modern artificial intelligence. The renaming is more than just a cosmetic change; it represents a strategic focus on broader AI applications within the Apple ecosystem.

For developers, the new framework likely offers more efficient ways to integrate external AI models. For users, it suggests a greater integration of intelligent features in iOS 27.

With the anticipated Siri upgrade in iOS 26.5 and the unveiling of Core AI at WWDC, several important steps are on the horizon. Apple is thus preparing for a phase in which artificial intelligence will play an even more central role within its platform. (Image: Shutterstock / Tada Images)
