Apple offers a glimpse into its Mac mini factory in Texas

Apple has announced that it will produce the Mac mini in the US. Shortly afterward, the company released further details, photos, and videos of the production facility in Houston, Texas. This clearly clarifies Apple's plans to expand manufacturing in the United States. In addition to assembling the Mac mini, the Houston facility will also ramp up production of AI servers. These servers are intended for Apple Intelligence and play a central role in the company's AI strategy.

Apple's decision is not just a business move, but also a political signal. The relocation or expansion of production capacity to the USA fits into a period in which the topic of American manufacturing is in the spotlight.

Apple is thus clearly positioning itself for the future of manufacturing in the USA. At the same time, the announcement comes at a politically sensitive moment. The annual State of the Union address is approaching, and industrial policy is likely to be a topic of discussion. Observers assume that Apple also intends to strengthen its relationship with the government with this move, particularly with regard to potential exemptions from newly announced tariffs.

Mac mini: Production to start this year

The first official confirmation of Mac mini production in the US came from Sabih Khan, Apple's Chief Operating Officer. He spoke in a video interview with the Wall Street Journal during a tour of a Foxconn factory in Houston, Texas. Khan explained:

We’re very excited to tell you that later this year we will be beginning Mac mini manufacturing right here in this space.

This confirms that final assembly of the Mac mini will take place in Houston in the future. Production is scheduled to start later this year.

Apple had previously announced plans to manufacture servers in the US. These plans were published in August, followed by an update in October confirming that everything was proceeding as scheduled. The integration of Mac mini assembly now significantly expands upon these original plans.

Ramp-up of AI server production for Apple Intelligence

Alongside Mac mini production, the Houston plant is also expanding the production of AI servers. These servers are intended for Apple Intelligence. Tim Cook, Apple CEO, explained:

Apple is deeply committed to the future of American manufacturing, and we’re proud to significantly expand our footprint in Houston with the production of Mac mini starting later this year. We began shipping advanced AI servers from Houston ahead of schedule, and we’re excited to accelerate that work even further.

According to Cook, Apple has already begun shipping the AI servers from Houston earlier than planned. Production is now to be accelerated further. This will make the Texas location a key center for hardware used in the field of artificial intelligence.

Doubling of the campus and new Advanced Manufacturing Center

Apple announced that the expansion to include Mac mini assembly will double the size of its Houston campus. However, the investment extends beyond mere product assembly.

An Advanced Manufacturing Center with an area of 20,000 square meters is also planned for Houston. The specialized facility is currently under construction and is scheduled to open later this year. The center will:

  • Offer students practical training in advanced manufacturing techniques
  • Further training of employees of suppliers
  • American companies of all sizes train

Apple experts will teach the same innovative production methods used in the manufacture of Apple products. The goal is to help American manufacturers further develop their production processes and raise them to a higher technological level.

Political background and timing of the announcement

The timing of the release of these new details is likely not coincidental. Donald Trump will soon deliver his annual State of the Union address, in which he is expected to praise himself for strengthening US manufacturing.

At the same time, Apple is operating in an environment of newly announced tariffs. It is considered likely that the company intends to improve its position with the government by expanding its production in the US, in order to secure possible exemptions or relief.

Apple expands manufacturing and AI infrastructure in Texas

With the production of the Mac mini in Houston, Apple is significantly expanding its manufacturing activities in the USA. In addition to the final assembly of the Mac mini, the production of AI servers for Apple Intelligence will also be accelerated there.

The doubling of the campus and the construction of a 20,000-square-meter Advanced Manufacturing Center demonstrate that this is a long-term investment. Apple is thus combining product manufacturing, AI infrastructure, and training programs at a central location.

Houston is thus developing into a strategically important hub within Apple's US production strategy. (Image: Apple)
