Apple releases iOS 26.3 and other system updates

Apple has released the final versions of iOS 26.3, iPadOS 26.3, macOS 26.3, watchOS 26.3, tvOS 26.3, and visionOS 26.3 to all users. This concludes a deliberately concise beta phase in which Apple focused on stability, interoperability, and regulatory compliance. Major new features were not the primary focus; instead, existing functions were enhanced and structural changes were implemented.

iOS 26.3 follows the extensive iOS 26.2 update and focuses on a different area. This update concentrates on system-wide improvements, data privacy, device switching, and the opening of previously closed interfaces. Many of the new features are technically significant and will have a particularly long-term impact on everyday use.

iOS 26.3 as a targeted interim update

With iOS 26.3, Apple is pursuing a clear approach. Instead of significantly overhauling the system's appearance or functionality, existing vulnerabilities have been addressed. Regulatory requirements, such as those from the European Union, play a central role. At the same time, the update improves compatibility with devices and platforms outside the Apple ecosystem.

The final version is identical in content to the previously released Release Candidate. No new features have been added.

Easier switching from iPhone to Android

One of the most important new features in iOS 26.3 is a new transfer tool for switching from an iPhone to an Android smartphone. Apple is integrating this function directly into the system for the first time. A separate app download is not required.

Once the two devices are connected, key content can be transferred, including photos, messages, notes, contacts, passwords, apps, and other personal data. Sensitive information such as health data, paired Bluetooth devices, and protected content like locked notes are excluded.

Together with a comparable solution from Google, this creates for the first time an almost bidirectional platform switch between iOS and Android.

Forward notifications to third-party wearables

iOS 26.3 opens the notification system to third-party wearables for the first time. A new setting in the "Notifications" section allows incoming iPhone notifications to be forwarded to an external wearable.

Apple deliberately limits this feature. Forwarding is only possible to a single device at a time. As soon as a third-party wearable is active, the Apple Watch no longer receives notifications. Simultaneous use is not supported.

This change is directly related to regulatory pressure, particularly from the Digital Markets Act and antitrust proceedings in the USA.

New control over location data in the mobile network

iOS 26.3 expands the privacy settings with a previously barely visible, but relevant feature. Users can now limit the accuracy of location data that mobile network operators receive via the network.

With the new "Limit precise location" option, the transmitted position is intentionally less precise. Instead of an exact location, network operators only receive a rough area of presence. The network functionality itself remains unaffected.

This feature is currently only available with select network operators, including Telekom in Germany. Special hardware is also required. Only devices with Apple's C1 or C1X modem are supported, such as the iPhone Air or iPhone 16e. Emergency call and security features remain fully functional.

New weather wallpapers for the lock screen

The lock screen has also been slightly redesigned. Weather and astronomy backgrounds are now clearly separated. Additionally, new weather wallpapers with different layouts, clock displays, and widget combinations are available. This makes personalization clearer and more structured.

No changes to device compatibility

iOS 26.3 is compatible with all iPhones that already support iOS 26. There are no new hardware limitations. The same applies to the other operating systems iPadOS 26.3, macOS 26.3, watchOS 26.3, tvOS 26.3, and visionOS 26.3.

iOS 26.3 strengthens openness and everyday usability

With iOS 26.3, Apple demonstrates that even minor updates can pursue a clear strategic direction. The simplified switch to Android, the opening up to third-party wearables, and the new control over location data on the cellular network represent greater openness and user control.

The update deliberately avoids spectacular new features, but strengthens important foundations for future developments regarding data privacy, interoperability, and system freedom. iOS 26.3 is therefore a solid, technically relevant update within the iOS 26 generation.
