iOS 26.3 restricts location data for network operators

iOS 26.3 expands the privacy settings of iPhones and iPads with a feature that specifically restricts location tracking by mobile network operators. Apple is thus addressing an issue that has previously received little attention: location tracking via cellular networks, independent of traditional location services. The update aims to provide greater control over location data without restricting device functionality or security features.

A smartphone's location isn't determined solely through GPS or app permissions. Mobile networks can also pinpoint a device's location by analyzing which cell towers it's connected to. This type of tracking is technically necessary, but often provides very precise location data. iOS 26.3 addresses this by introducing, for the first time, a system-wide option to intentionally reduce this accuracy.

New privacy setting in iOS 26.3

With iOS 26.3, Apple introduces the "Limit Precise Location" setting. When this option is enabled, mobile network operators receive less precise location information. Instead of an exact position down to street level, only an approximate area of presence is transmitted, such as a neighborhood or a larger region.

The basic functionality of the mobile network remains unchanged. The device still connects to cell towers, but certain detailed data for precise location tracking is deliberately restricted.

Supported mobile network operators and countries

The new feature is only available with certain network providers. According to Apple's support document, limiting precise location tracking is currently supported in the following countries and networks:

  • Germany: Telekom
  • Great Britain: EE, BT
  • United States: Boost Mobile
  • Thailand: AIS, True

Other network operators do not currently support this feature.

Requirements: Devices and modems

The location restriction feature only works on devices equipped with Apple's C1 or C1X modems. These include:

  • iPhone Air
  • iPhone 16e
  • iPad Pro M5 with cellular module

Additionally, iOS 26.3 or iPadOS 26.3 is required. This feature is not available on older devices or with other modems.

Activating location restriction

The new setting is made directly via the system settings:

  • Open the "Settings" app
  • Select the respective mobile service
  • Open mobile data options
  • „Activate "Restrict precise location".

After enabling or disabling the option, a device restart is required for the change to take effect.

Impact on network quality and security

Apple states that the reduced location accuracy will not affect signal quality or the overall user experience. Connection stability and mobile data connections also remain unchanged.

  • Equally important: This setting does not affect the accuracy of the location data provided to emergency services during an emergency call. Emergency call and security functions will continue to operate with the necessary precise information.

Differentiation from app location services

The new feature only affects location data available to cellular networks. Location information shared with apps via iOS Location Services remains unaffected. App permissions and existing privacy settings for GPS and location services will continue to function as usual.

Current version of iOS 26.3

iOS 26.3 is currently in beta testing. The final version of the update is expected to be released in the coming weeks. With the official release, the new privacy setting will be available for all supported devices and mobile carriers.

iOS 26.3 brings more control over location data on the cellular network

With iOS 26.3, Apple expands data privacy to include an area that previously operated in the background: location tracking by cellular networks. The new setting allows for reduced location accuracy for network operators without impacting usage, network quality, or security. This represents another step towards greater control over personal location data. (Image: Apfelpatient)
