Tim Cook: Apple remains committed to data privacy despite Google partnership

Apple is currently under intense scrutiny regarding artificial intelligence and data privacy. The announced collaboration with Google on the Gemini AI model has raised many questions. At the heart of these concerns is the possibility that Apple will weaken its strict data privacy principles. Apple CEO Tim Cook has once again clearly refuted these fears.

Apple has pursued its own strategy regarding AI and data privacy for years. With Apple Intelligence, its own Foundation Models, and its architecture combining on-device processing and private cloud computing, the company deliberately differentiates itself from other AI providers. At first glance, the partnership with Google appears to be a break with this approach. However, a closer look reveals that Apple intends to retain full control.

Apple is not changing its privacy policy

In an interview with CNBC before the release of the quarterly results, Tim Cook made it unequivocally clear that Apple is not making any changes to its privacy policies. His statement was clear: the architecture will remain exactly as previously announced – processing on the device and via private cloud compute.

This makes it clear that Apple Intelligence continues to be based on its own models. User data will neither be stored permanently nor shared with third parties.

The role of Google Gemini in the Apple ecosystem

Apple is collaborating with Google to gain access to a powerful Gemini model. This model, with approximately 1.2 trillion parameters, will not be used directly by users. Instead, Gemini will apparently be used to train and improve Apple's own Foundation Models.

The details of this agreement are not publicly known. However, it is clear that Apple Intelligence will continue to run on Apple devices. Interaction will take place exclusively with these devices – either directly on the device or via private cloud computing.

Apple Intelligence remains entirely under Apple control

If the current plans remain unchanged, the technology behind Apple Intelligence is entirely Apple-developed. Google Gemini merely acts as a training aid in the background. This process remains invisible to the user.

Even though Gemini plays an important role in training, the actual AI used is developed and operated by Apple. This means that Apple retains control over data privacy and security.

New Siri features starting with iOS 26.4

The first version of Apple's enhanced Intelligence and a significantly improved Siri is expected with iOS 26.4. Siri should then behave more like a modern Large Language Model and be able to understand more complex relationships.

Siri will continue to provide a secure interface to local data on the device as well as to the internet. The goal is to integrate the capabilities of modern AI systems without compromising privacy.

Outlook for WWDC 2026

Apple is expected to announce further innovations for Siri at WWDC 2026. The voice assistant is expected to gain more conversation memory and be able to react better to tone of voice and emotions.

A standalone Siri app is still not planned. Nevertheless, Siri is functionally approaching the level of a chatbot without fundamentally changing the existing user interface.

Server capacity and potential dependence on Google

Another factor concerns the hardware side. Nvidia's strong demand for similar components to those Apple uses in its own chips could limit Apple's ability to provide sufficiently powerful servers.

Rumors suggest that Apple could once again rely on Google in this scenario, using its servers as infrastructure for private cloud computing. Even then, the Apple Foundation models would remain under Apple's control. The infrastructure would be leased, but the technology and data processing would remain with Apple.

Legal implications of Tim Cook's statements

Tim Cook's statements carry particular weight because they were made in the context of earnings reporting. Should these statements prove false, and should users actually interact directly with Gemini or share data with Google, there would be legal consequences.

In such a case, lawsuits and action by the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) would be expected. This is precisely why it can be assumed that Apple is proceeding very deliberately and cautiously with these commitments.

Apple Intelligence remains under Apple control despite the Google partnership

The collaboration between Apple and Google is generating attention, but according to Apple, it doesn't change the fundamental architecture of Apple Intelligence. The AI capabilities continue to be based on Apple Foundation Models, which run on the device and via private cloud computing. Google Gemini plays a role in training, but not in direct user interaction. Apple thus remains true to its policy of combining powerful AI with high standards of data privacy and security.
