With ChatGPT Health, OpenAI expands its offering to include a dedicated health section within ChatGPT. This section aims to clearly separate health-related questions from the rest of the chat. At the same time, OpenAI focuses on enhanced personalization through the integration of external health services. The new section is designed for users who want to better understand and structure their health data, without replacing medical advice.
Health is a sensitive topic, both in terms of content and data handling. That's precisely why ChatGPT Health isn't simply being introduced as a new feature within the existing chat, but rather as a separate area with its own privacy policy. OpenAI's goal is to create greater clarity, more context, and greater security. The feature is designed to help categorize information and prepare conversations, not to make diagnoses or suggest therapies.
What ChatGPT Health is and how it works
ChatGPT Health is a dedicated section within ChatGPT exclusively for health-related questions. Content in this section is clearly separated from general conversations. If a health-related topic is raised in the regular ChatGPT interface, the system automatically suggests moving the conversation to the "Health" section.
The focus is on answering questions about well-being, fitness and medical data in a structured way and presenting the connections in an understandable manner.
Integration of Apple Health and other services
For personalized answers, various health and fitness services can be connected to ChatGPT Health. These include, among others:
- Apple Health
- Function
- MyFitnessPal
- Weight Watchers
- AllTrails
- Instacart
- Peloton
Once connected, ChatGPT Health can access health and fitness data, including movement data, sleep patterns, and activity patterns. Hints of Apple Health integration had already been discovered in the ChatGPT app last month. This official announcement now confirms the connection.
Use of medical records
In addition to fitness and activity data, ChatGPT Health can also be integrated with medical records. This includes lab results and other information from the patient's medical history. This data can be analyzed to better understand questions or to explain results more clearly.
OpenAI clarifies that ChatGPT Health is not intended for diagnoses or treatments. The service does not replace medical advice, but can help understand medical information or prepare specifically for doctor's appointments.
Data protection and security
Data protection and security play a central role when handling health data. ChatGPT Health was developed with multiple layers of encryption and functions as a separate area with enhanced protection. By default, data from ChatGPT Health is not used to train the base ChatGPT models.
This separation is intended to ensure that sensitive information remains especially protected and does not unintentionally flow into other contexts.
Start, waiting list and availability
ChatGPT Health will initially launch via a waiting list for a limited group of beta users. Eligible participants are users of ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans, but only those located outside the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.
The integration of medical records and some of the connected apps are currently only available in the United States. Access to ChatGPT Health will be gradually rolled out to all users on the web and iOS in the coming weeks.
ChatGPT Health as a supportive companion
With ChatGPT Health, OpenAI creates a clearly defined space for health-related questions, combining personalization and data privacy. The combination of app integrations, the ability to analyze medical records, and the deliberate separation from medical treatment demonstrates the direction in which ChatGPT is evolving. ChatGPT Health is therefore less of a medical tool and more of a structured companion for better understanding health data and communicating more effectively with healthcare professionals.
