No sooner has iOS 26.1 been released than the next beta is already underway. Apple is currently testing iOS 26.2, and the update is packed with features. Besides minor improvements, there are a number of new functions – from live translation with AirPods in Europe and revised sleep assessments to a new design element on the lock screen. The first beta clearly demonstrates the direction in which the system is evolving.

With iOS 26.2, Apple focuses on greater personalization, improved health data, accessibility, and smart system features. Some changes are immediately noticeable, while others are hidden deeper in the settings or code. The new version remains compatible with all iPhones that already support iOS 26 and is expected to be released in December.

Lock screen: New design with Liquid Glass

iOS 26.2 introduces a new slider for the appearance of the clock on the lock screen. The so-called "Liquid Glass" slider allows users to adjust the transparency of the clock display – from crystal clear to matte. Those who prefer a completely opaque design can disable Liquid Glass with the switch. The existing color options for the clock remain available.

Sleep score: New scale and more realistic values

Apple has revamped the sleep score measured on compatible Apple Watches running watchOS 26.2. The rating scale has been adjusted to better reflect individual sleep experiences. "Excellent" is now "Very High," and the other categories have been repositioned.

  • Very low: 0–40 (previously 0–29)
  • Low: 41–60 (previously 30–49)
  • OK: 61–80 (previously 50–69)
  • High: 81–95 (previously 70–89)
  • Very high: 96–100 (previously 90–100)

The sleep score is composed of sleep duration (50 points), bedtime (30 points), and interruptions (20 points). A total of 100 points is possible per night. The scores can be viewed as usual in the Health app on your iPhone.

AirPods Live Translation: Now also available in the EU

With iOS 26.2, AirPods Live Translation is finally available in the European Union . Apple had previously withheld the feature in Europe to comply with the Digital Markets Act. Live Translation works with AirPods Pro 3, AirPods Pro 2, and AirPods 4 with ANC. The following languages are currently supported: English, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Chinese (Traditional and Simplified), Japanese, and Korean.

Reminders: New alarm function

The Reminders app has a new feature that triggers an alarm when a reminder is due. The alarm is activated by selecting the "Urgent" option. When the alarm sounds, a snooze or stop button appears—similar to a regular alarm clock. During the snooze phase, the lock screen displays a countdown with options to complete or postpone the task. Apple has also color-coded reminder alarms—they now appear in blue.

Freeform: Tables are supported

The Freeform app has been enhanced and can now display tables. This makes the app more useful for planning, brainstorming, or collaborating on structured content.

Passwords: Managing exceptions

The password manager now includes a new setting to specifically define websites where passwords should not be automatically saved. This provides greater control over password security.

Podcasts: More structure and interaction

The podcast app is getting three new features: chapters are automatically created, there's an overview of podcast mentions in the transcript, and access to links mentioned during the episode. All three new features improve navigation and context.

AirDrop: PIN-based extension

The code of iOS 26.2 contains references to a new AirDrop feature where two users can send each other a PIN. This code then unlocks AirDrop for 30 days – significantly longer than the previous 10-minute limit for non-contacts.

Weather app: Improved time information

The weather app appears to be using relative timeframes like "next Tuesday" or "the day after tomorrow" for weather warnings. This improves the readability and contextualization of the information.

Apple News: New layout and dedicated tab

Apple News is getting a minor visual refresh. There are now quick access links to categories such as sports, politics, business, and food. Additionally, the "Following" tab is now separate from the search view.

Notifications: Screen can now blink

The accessibility options now include the ability to activate screen flashing for incoming notifications. Previously, this was only possible using the LED on the back. Now, both can be activated separately or together.

Beta and release

The developer beta of iOS 26.2 is already available. The public beta is expected to launch later this week. Apple anticipates releasing the final update in December – currently sometime between December 9th and 16th.

compatibility

iOS 26.2 runs on all iPhones that also support iOS 26. Anyone already using the current system can therefore easily upgrade to the new version as soon as it is available.

iOS 26.2 brings more than just fine-tuning.

iOS 26.2 delivers a wide range of new features that are both visually and functionally relevant. Some updates are small but effective—like the improved notifications or the freeform tables. Others, such as AirPods translation or the sleep score adjustment, demonstrate how Apple is strategically developing its services. Even in the beta phase, iOS 26.2 already appears stable and well-designed. The final version should bring noticeable improvements to many users.
