Apple confirms iPhone Air launch in China after delay

After a brief delay, Apple is finally bringing the iPhone Air to China. Apple CEO Tim Cook announced on Weibo during his visit to China that the new model can be pre-ordered starting Friday. Sales will begin a few days later. The iPhone Air is the thinnest iPhone to date and relies entirely on eSIM technology—a move that poses particular challenges for the Chinese market.

The iPhone Air was long awaited, and now it's finally here. Apple initially postponed its launch in China due to discussions with the authorities. The reason was the lack of support for eSIM, which is mandatory for the device. While the iPhone 17 series is already on shelves worldwide, China had to wait a little longer. Now it's confirmed: The iPhone Air can be pre-ordered starting October 17, and official sales will begin on October 22.

iPhone Air uses eSIM – no more space for physical cards

At just 5.6 millimeters thick, the iPhone Air is the thinnest smartphone Apple has ever built. To make the case so slim, Apple completely dispensed with the traditional SIM card slot. The device can be activated exclusively via eSIM. This was precisely the key point for the Chinese market launch.

In China, the major network operators—China Mobile, China Unicom, and China Telecom—have so far offered little support for eSIM technology. Apple has stated that the providers are now working on introducing the eSIM feature, although the timeline depends on regulatory approval. This makes the iPhone Air one of the first devices to advance this transition in the Chinese mobile market.

Price and market launch in China

The iPhone Air starts at 7,999 yuan in China. Pre-orders start on Friday, October 17, and sales begin on Wednesday, October 22. Tim Cook personally announced the details while traveling in China. With the iPhone Air, Apple aims to close the technological gap with other regions where eSIM has long been standard.

While the iPhone 17 series—iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max—is already available worldwide, Apple deliberately allowed more time for the iPhone Air to resolve regulatory issues surrounding the eSIM. Only after these coordinations were completed could the market launch be officially confirmed.

A device that sets direction

The iPhone Air is more than just another model. It demonstrates the direction Apple's iPhone design is heading: lighter, thinner, more digital. The elimination of physical SIM cards is seen as a step toward a completely digital infrastructure. This is a remarkable step for China, where eSIM has so far been largely unheard of.

With the iPhone Air, that's likely to change. As soon as network operators officially enable eSIM support, the device will be usable without restrictions. With the iPhone Air, Apple has not only introduced a new iPhone, but also sparked technological change in the world's largest smartphone market.

Apple sets a precedent for the next step with the iPhone Air

The iPhone Air launches in China slightly late, but with significant symbolic significance. It is the thinnest iPhone ever and the first to rely entirely on eSIM. Despite initial regulatory hurdles, the market launch is now officially scheduled. Apple is demonstrating once again that the company isn't waiting for technological developments, but rather leading them. The iPhone Air marks the transition to a new phase—one in which physical SIM cards could soon be a thing of the past.
