iOS 26: Apple Home app gets new automation options

With iOS 26, Apple is introducing a major innovation to the Home app that is designed to noticeably improve everyday life in the smart home. Adaptive Temperature ensures that the thermostat doesn't just operate manually or on a timer, but intelligently adapts to movements, routines, and habits. This fulfills a central promise of the smart home: technology that reacts automatically before it's needed.

The Home app is the central hub where all smart devices in the Apple ecosystem converge. While it's been possible to automate thermostat control until now, it's only with iOS 26 that the app gains native support for adaptive temperature features. Essentially, it's all about setting the temperature to suit your current situation—whether you're on the go, at home, or while you sleep.

Adaptive temperature in the Home app

Apple describes the new feature as intelligent automation that covers multiple scenarios. The thermostat can automatically adjust when someone is on their way home, when someone is sleeping, or when the house is empty for an extended period. The iPhone uses built-in intelligence to predict when someone will be home and adjusts the temperature accordingly. When someone is away, the thermostat is lowered to save energy. The sleep schedule created on the iPhone or Apple Watch is also incorporated, so the temperature is lowered at night when you go to bed and adjusted again in time for the morning.

Two central components

The adaptive temperature function essentially consists of two components:

  • Automatically adjusts when you're on the go or on your way home.
  • Adjustment based on sleep schedule.

Other smart thermostats have offered similar features in the past, albeit with mixed success. With iOS 26, this feature comes directly from Apple for the first time and is fully integrated into the Home app.

Benefits of integration in iOS 26

Apple's integration brings several advantages. On the one hand, the control system is reliably integrated into the Apple ecosystem, enabling seamless use. On the other hand, data protection also plays a role, as Apple attaches great importance to protecting personal data such as location and usage information. Furthermore, the function can be directly linked to existing routines on the iPhone and Apple Watch, making it easier to use.

Requirements for Adaptive Temperature

To use Adaptive Temperature, certain conditions must be met. Apple points out that a home hub such as Apple TV or HomePod is required. A compatible Matter thermostat is also required. Location services must also be enabled for the Home app and accessories. It's still unclear which thermostats are compatible with the new feature. Initial user experiences should provide clarity soon.

iOS 26 as a milestone for the Apple Home app

iOS 26 demonstrates that the Home app is becoming more than just a central control panel for smart devices. Adaptive Temperature combines comfort, energy efficiency, and data protection, taking the smart home to a new level. The decisive factors will be which thermostats are supported and how reliably the function works in everyday life. One thing is certain: The native integration in iOS 26 makes Adaptive Temperature one of the most exciting innovations in the smart home sector.
