With iOS 26 and HomePod Software 26, Apple has introduced several innovations that particularly impact the music experience. Anyone who uses Apple Music and has a HomePod can look forward to a few practical additions. The most notable of these is the crossfade feature, which provides smoother transitions between songs. Apple is also introducing a new way to select the Wi-Fi network directly for the HomePod—something that wasn't possible before.
iOS 26 is just around the corner and, combined with the new HomePod software version 26, brings a host of features that make everyday life with Apple devices a little more enjoyable. A particular focus is on improvements to Apple Music and music playback via HomePod. Beta testers can already try out some of these new features.
Crossfade for Apple Music on HomePod
With the update to iOS 26 and HomePod Software 26, Crossfade is now also available on the HomePod. Crossfade is an Apple Music feature that crossfades songs so that there are no audible pauses between tracks. While one song slowly fades out, the next fades in parallel. This ensures a smoother transition and a more pleasant listening experience. The duration of the crossfade can be individually adjusted. Possible values are between one and twelve seconds. This allows you to determine how noticeable the transitions between songs are. The feature was previously only available on iPhone, iPad and Mac. With iOS 26, it is now also available on the HomePod. An active Apple Music subscription is required to use it, as Crossfade is part of the Apple Music feature set.
How to find the crossfade setting on the HomePod
The crossfade option is located in the Home app and isn't immediately visible. To enable it, follow these steps:
- Open the Home app on your iPhone or iPad
- Go to “Settings”
- Tap your name
- Select “Apple Music”
- Activate Crossfade and set the desired transition duration
The feature is currently included in the second beta version of iOS 26 and HomePod Software 26. Anyone testing the beta can try out Crossfade now.
AutoMix replaces Crossfade on other devices
In addition to Crossfade, Apple introduced a new feature in iOS 26 and iPadOS 26: AutoMix. This replaces Crossfade and goes a step further. AutoMix uses time stretching and beat matching to make transitions even more seamless – similar to a DJ mix. The feature automatically detects the beat of the songs and adjusts the transitions accordingly. AutoMix is thus an evolution of Crossfade, but is currently limited to iPhone and iPad.
New Wi-Fi feature for the HomePod
Another useful feature in HomePod Software 26 concerns Wi-Fi connectivity. For the first time, you can now directly select a Wi-Fi network to which the HomePod should connect. Before the update, the HomePod relied on automatically adopting the network of the paired iPhone. This provides more control and flexibility, especially in households with multiple networks or mesh systems.
iOS 26 enhances Apple Music – also on the HomePod
With iOS 26 and the new HomePod software, Apple is bringing useful features to Apple Music and HomePod users. Crossfade improves the music experience with smooth transitions, AutoMix on iPhone and iPad ensures even smoother mixes, and the ability to directly select Wi-Fi makes setup more flexible. Anyone who already uses Apple Music should definitely check out the update—especially if they have a HomePod. Looking for accessories?
