Apple is working on the next version of Siri with these apps

Apple is currently working on a new generation of Siri, which is intended to be significantly more intelligent and versatile than before. A key element of this development is the App Intents system, which allows apps to seamlessly integrate with Siri and Apple Intelligence. Big names from the app world are already participating in the development phase to get a head start when the update is released.

The further development of Siri is one of the largest software projects Apple has launched in recent years. The goal is to make the voice assistant not only more modern but also more flexible – with deep integration with third-party apps. This means additional work for developers, as the transition to the App Intents system is more complex than previous integrations. In addition, there is likely to be little time to make adjustments before Apple releases the new Siri version in the beta program.

App Intents as the key to the next Siri

The App Intents system has been around for years in conjunction with Shortcuts, Spotlight, and widgets. For Siri, it means that in the future, not only simple commands but also more complex, context-dependent actions will be possible. In the developer documentation, Apple points out that Siri is currently being enhanced with features such as personalized context understanding, screen awareness, and advanced in-app actions. These will be enabled with a future software update.

Which apps already work with Apple

It's already clear that some popular apps are at the forefront of working with the new Siri. Industry expert Mark Gurman cites eight concrete examples:

  • AllTrails
  • threads
  • Temu
  • Amazon
  • YouTube
  • Facebook
  • WhatsApp

In addition to these apps, Apple is also testing the new Siri with its own applications and even some games. The latter may surprise many, but it suggests that Apple wants to expand the voice assistant's reach significantly.

Delays in launch

Apple unveiled the redesigned Siri system at WWDC 2024. It was originally scheduled for release by spring. However, the date has been postponed, and a launch next year is currently being discussed. The main reason for the delay is the hybrid approach: parts of the old Siri system will remain, but will be combined with new, powerful language models. This complex integration requires more development time than initially planned.

Competition and strategic differences

While Apple is still optimizing, Amazon has already released a comparable upgrade with Alexa+. Initial assessments, however, show that the new Alexa system performs worse in some simple tasks than the previous version. This could confirm Apple's more cautious development approach—the new Siri could have a more reliable launch, even if it launches later.

Apple relies on context-aware interaction

The upcoming version of Siri is intended to be more than just a revamped voice assistant. Apple is planning an intelligent platform that is context-aware and deeply integrated with third-party apps. With the App Intents system, strong partners, and a broad testing base, Siri could make a significant leap in quality. Even if the launch is delayed, there's a good chance that Apple will ultimately deliver a system that's more convincing in everyday use than previous versions—and perhaps even than the competition's solutions.
