iOS 26 brings a major feature update to the AirPods. In addition to improvements in sound quality, there are new control and convenience options that simplify everyday use. The updates will be officially released this fall, but can already be tested in beta.
With the new AirPods features in iOS 26, Apple is placing the earbuds even more centrally within its device ecosystem. The enhancements cover a variety of uses – from creative possibilities to improved voice and audio quality to practical power-saving options. A total of seven new features will be available with the new AirPods firmware.
Camera remote control
AirPods can now be used as a camera remote for the Camera app or third-party apps. Once enabled in the AirPods settings, a long press on the stem is enough to take a photo or start recording a video. Pressing again stops the recording. Compared to remote control with the Apple Watch, the process is faster because no app needs to be opened.
Studio-quality audio recordings
AirPods 4 and AirPods Pro 2 support studio-quality audio recording. Ideal for interviews, podcasts, songs, videos, or other voice recordings. Voice Isolation filters out background noise to create a clean audio track. This feature is available on iPhone, iPad, and Mac and can be used in the Camera app, Voice Memos, Message Dictation, third-party camera apps, and video conferencing software.
Improved call quality
The H2 chip in AirPods 4 and AirPods Pro 2 delivers clearer, more natural voice reproduction on iPhone and FaceTime calls, as well as in all CallKit-enabled apps like Zoom. This optimization improves intelligibility and reduces distracting background noise.
Pause audio while sleeping
With the new "Pause Media When Falling Asleep" setting, audio playback automatically pauses as soon as it detects that you're falling asleep. In addition to saving your position in a podcast or audiobook, this feature saves battery life by preventing your AirPods from running unnecessarily. Beats earbuds are also supported. The option is available in the AirPods settings but requires iOS 26 and the new AirPods firmware.
Keep audio in headphones
A new option prevents music from automatically switching to the car speakers when using CarPlay. "Keep Audio in Headphones" ensures playback continues through the AirPods even when the iPhone is connected to the car. This setting can be found under "General" > "AirPlay & Continuity."
New charging reminders
The AirPods charging case now displays battery status more clearly. A green LED indicates a full battery, a flashing yellow LED indicates charging, and a dimmer yellow LED indicates a low battery. Additionally, notifications alert you when charging is necessary.
Easier beta updates
In iOS 26, beta updates for AirPods can be enabled directly in Settings. Once connected to the iPhone, the beta firmware can be automatically downloaded and installed to test new features before the official release.
AirPods benefit greatly from the iOS 26 update
The new features in iOS 26 demonstrate that AirPods can increasingly be used as multifunctional devices in the Apple universe. The seven new features combine practical everyday aids with professional audio functions and smart control options.
