Alongside the iOS 26 public beta, Apple also released a public beta version for the AirPods for the first time. This allows users to test new features before they're officially released. An iPhone with the iOS 26 beta installed is required. The AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods 4 are supported. Installation is quick, but there are a few things to keep in mind.

Firmware updates for AirPods typically run in the background. With the iOS 26 beta, Apple is providing direct access to a test version for certain AirPods models for the first time. This brings new features to the device early, including audio quality improvements, new camera controls, and automatic sleep detection. Those who choose the beta should be aware that this is a test version—stability issues and battery life limitations are possible.

Requirement: iOS 26 Beta on the iPhone

The beta version for AirPods only works with iOS 26. This means the iPhone must have the iOS 26 public beta installed. Registration for the beta program is done via Apple's official website. Installation is completed in just a few minutes; complete instructions are available here .

Installing the AirPods beta step by step

If iOS 26 is already running, you can activate the AirPods beta as follows:

  1. Connect AirPods to iPhone
  2. Open Settings on iPhone
  3. Tap the AirPods name at the top of the settings
    • If the AirPods are not displayed there:
      • Search for the AirPods in the Bluetooth settings
      • Tap the “i” to the right of the device name
  4. Scroll down and select “AirPods Beta Updates”
  5. Activate switch

Once the switch is flipped, the beta will be installed automatically.

  • Important: The AirPods must be in the charging case and near the iPhone. Installation won't start immediately, but will run in the background once all conditions are met.

Five new features for AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods 4

The new firmware brings five specific new features. All features are aimed exclusively at users of AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods 4.

  • Studio-quality audio recordings: When recording audio with AirPods, the sound is more natural and clear. This benefits voice messages, voice memos, podcasts, or any other form of audio recording.
  • Improved voice quality on calls: The microphone technology has been redesigned. The result: better speech intelligibility on phone calls, FaceTime conversations, and audio recordings.
  • Remote camera control via the AirPods stem: Pressing and holding the AirPods stem triggers the iPhone's camera. This lets you take photos or videos—useful for selfies or group shots.
  • Sleep Detection: AirPods now automatically detect when you've fallen asleep. Music or podcasts are then paused. This feature is intended to help you better adapt your listening habits to your sleep rhythm in the long term.
  • Automatic device switching with CarPlay: When using a car with CarPlay, the AirPods detect whether audio is currently playing through the iPhone or the infotainment system. Switching occurs automatically – without manual intervention.

Possible restrictions due to the beta

As with all public betas, the AirPods version may experience issues. Initial tests have shown occasional connection drops and slightly reduced battery life. Those who rely on stable performance should wait to install. For everyone else, the beta is a good opportunity to test new features early.
