Since their launch in 2016, AirPods have become one of Apple's most iconic products. What began as a pair of wireless earbuds has now become a versatile audio accessory with numerous features. Now, there's concrete evidence that Apple plans to overhaul the entire AirPods lineup in the coming years. In this article, you'll learn what's known about the upcoming AirPods, AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max, and what new features you might expect.
If you're an AirPod user, you'll know how seamlessly they integrate into your daily life. Listen to music, make phone calls, use Siri—all wirelessly. But Apple is planning much more than just minor improvements. The next models could feature new hardware, smart cameras, and even health features. Here's what analysts, leakers, and patents reveal about the future of AirPods.
AirPods with camera and Visual Intelligence
Apple is apparently working on a new version of the AirPods with an integrated camera. Initial information surfaced in early 2024, under the internal codename B796. The cameras aren't intended for photos or videos, but rather for capturing visual data for Apple Intelligence. These are presumably infrared sensors that can detect movement and surroundings. The AirPods are said to be able to register head movements and adjust the audio playback accordingly—especially when combined with Apple Vision Pro. So, if you turn your head, the surround sound could automatically adjust.

The cameras will also be able to transmit visual information to the iPhone, which may still be in your pocket, for example. This would make it possible for Apple Intelligence to provide you with context-based information, such as the location of a nearby store based on scanned signs or shop windows. According to Kuo, Apple could have up to 10 million of these camera-equipped AirPods produced annually, including by Foxconn in India. Although these are still rumors, the indications point to a far-reaching upgrade.
AirPods Pro 3 with new features and new chip
The next generation of AirPods Pro is expected towards the end of 2025. The AirPods Pro 3 could feature a new design and, for the first time, an integrated heart rate sensor. This feature has already been discussed in patents and was confirmed again in rumors in 2024. By integrating health features, the AirPods Pro 3 could not only deliver sound but also measure your heart rate. Improvements to active noise cancellation (ANC) are also being discussed. Apple could also install a new H3 chip, which would provide greater performance and efficiency. The official unveiling is expected at the iPhone event in September 2025. The price could still be around €279.
AirPods Max with less weight and USB-C port
Apple is also planning innovations for the AirPods Max. According to Ming-Chi Kuo , a revised model is scheduled to go into mass production in 2027. The goal is to significantly reduce weight – a criticism of the current version, which weighs around 384.8 grams. A minor update with a USB-C port instead of the old Lightning port was already planned for 2024. A new feature expected with iOS 19 is Live Translation. This would allow conversations to be translated in real time from one language to another, directly through your AirPods. This feature would be particularly useful when traveling or in multilingual meetings.
Further developments: Display in the charging case and affordable models
Apple has filed patents showing an AirPods charging case with an integrated display. This would allow you to, for example, change music tracks or check the battery level without picking up your iPhone. Whether this idea will actually be implemented remains to be seen. There are also repeated rumors about cheaper models like AirPods Lite or AirPods Pro Lite. These are intended to bridge the gap between the standard and Pro models. However, no concrete development has been announced since the end of 2020.
From cameras to AI: Apple's big AirPods plans
Apple is planning several major updates for the AirPods series in the coming years. The AirPods with cameras, in particular, could set new standards when it comes to combining audio, motion, and artificial intelligence. The AirPods Pro 3 also promise interesting innovations with new sensors and a redesigned design. The AirPods Max 2 are primarily expected to be lighter and boast new software features like Live Translation. So, if you're looking for new features or simply want to know what's coming with AirPods, it's worth keeping an eye on the upcoming developments. Apple remains true to its commitment to seamlessly integrating technology into everyday life – and your AirPods could soon be able to do more than you can imagine today. Time for fresh accessories?
