Import Markdown files into Apple Notes
To import an existing Markdown file into Notes, a short process is sufficient:
- Open the file with the .md extension on the iPhone using the Files app or a writing app.
- Select Notes from the Share menu.
- Confirm with Import.
The file is saved in the Imported Notes folder. There, you can check whether headings, lists, or text formatting have been correctly imported.
On an iPad with iPadOS 26, there is an additional menu option:
- From the menu bar, select “File” ➝ “Import into Notes…”.
- Specify the desired Markdown file and import it.
During import, the plain text symbols are automatically converted into rich text formatting so that the content appears like a normal note.
Export notes in Markdown format
Export is also easy to implement:
- Open the desired note in Apple Notes.
- Tap the share icon in the top right corner.
- Select the Export as Markdown option.
- In the sharing window, specify the destination or app for the file.
The exported file conforms to the Markdown standard and can be used in compatible tools such as GitHub, Obsidian or various CMS platforms without any adjustments.
