With iOS 26, Apple is introducing a new feature to the Notes app that's especially interesting for people who regularly work with structured text. For the first time, Markdown files can be directly imported and exported. This closes a gap that many people previously had to overcome with external tools or third-party apps.

Markdown is a simple, plain-text syntax that gives text structure and formatting with just a few characters. Symbols like # for headings or ** for bold are standard and allow a document to be used both as plain text and as a neatly formatted file. In iOS 26, Apple has integrated this feature directly into the Notes app. This creates a connection between classic notes and the flexibility of Markdown, without the need for additional conversions.

Markdown support in Apple Notes

The implementation in iOS 26 works both ways. Markdown files can be imported while retaining formatting such as headings, links, or lists. Likewise, content from notes can be exported as Markdown files for further use in text editors, content management systems, or documentation tools. It's important to note that Apple Notes doesn't display Markdown syntax while you're writing. Within the app, the display remains as usual in rich text. The conversion only occurs during import or export, so the Markdown elements are only visible when the file is opened outside of the Notes app.

Import Markdown files into Apple Notes

To import an existing Markdown file into Notes, a short process is sufficient:

  • Open the file with the .md extension on the iPhone using the Files app or a writing app.
  • Select Notes from the Share menu.
  • Confirm with Import.

The file is saved in the Imported Notes folder. There, you can check whether headings, lists, or text formatting have been correctly imported.

On an iPad with iPadOS 26, there is an additional menu option:

  • From the menu bar, select “File” ➝ “Import into Notes…”.
  • Specify the desired Markdown file and import it.

During import, the plain text symbols are automatically converted into rich text formatting so that the content appears like a normal note.

Export notes in Markdown format

Export is also easy to implement:

  • Open the desired note in Apple Notes.
  • Tap the share icon in the top right corner.
  • Select the Export as Markdown option.
  • In the sharing window, specify the destination or app for the file.

The exported file conforms to the Markdown standard and can be used in compatible tools such as GitHub, Obsidian or various CMS platforms without any adjustments.

Meaning of the new feature in iOS 26

The integration of Markdown into Apple Notes offers several advantages. Existing workflows can be seamlessly integrated with the native app, eliminating the need for additional programs. Exporting to Markdown makes content universally usable and saves time because it can be further edited directly in other applications. At the same time, the familiar ease of use of the Notes app is maintained, without the plain-text syntax getting in the way while writing.

iOS 26 makes notes more flexible and compatible

iOS 26 brings a major innovation to the Notes app: Markdown can now be imported and exported. This makes working with formatted text easier, more flexible, and more compatible with common platforms. The official launch of iOS 26 is expected in September and will likely be a decisive reason for many to install the update promptly.
