The iPhone Fold is getting closer. For Apple, it would be their entry into the foldable smartphone market, which so far has been dominated by just a few manufacturers. Details about its features, battery size, and display design are becoming increasingly clear. The prospect of the largest battery ever installed in an iPhone is particularly striking.
Battery life is a major concern for foldable devices. While many models offer flexible displays, they often fall short when it comes to power delivery. Apple appears to be addressing this issue. Various leaks and reports paint a fairly clear picture of the iPhone Fold. Despite some uncertainties, they offer a glimpse into Apple's priorities and the technical decisions that may have already been made.
Battery size and energy efficiency
According to the leaker account yeux1122, Apple is currently testing a battery with a capacity between 5400 and 5800 mAh. These values would surpass all previous iPhones. For comparison, the iPhone 17 Pro Max uses a 5088 mAh battery. An iPhone Fold would also be very well positioned in the foldable smartphone market. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold has a 5015 mAh battery, and the Galaxy Z Fold 7 has a 4400 mAh battery. Should Apple actually choose the higher of these values, the device would have a battery life exceeding that of its main competitors.
An earlier report from the same Korean source indicates that Apple is working hard on efficiency alongside increasing battery capacity. Key internal components are said to have been slimmed down. At the same time, battery life remains a focus. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reports that Apple is using high-density battery cells in the iPhone Fold. According to the new leak, Apple is likely following the strategy of the iPhone Air, which also entered its final development phase with a larger battery capacity.
Displays and operation
Several sources agree on the display size. The main display is said to reach 7.8 inches when unfolded, while the cover display measures 5.5 inches. This information comes from Kuo, Jeff Pu, and the Weibo leaker Digital Chat Station. This places the device firmly in the category of larger foldables, while still remaining compact enough to be used as a regular smartphone when closed.
Reports indicate that the iPhone Fold will use Touch ID instead of Face ID. This approach is reminiscent of the iPad Air and iPad mini, where authentication is also integrated into the power button.
Cameras and connectivity
The camera system is expected to consist of four modules: a front-facing camera, an internal camera (possibly positioned under the display), and two rear-facing cameras. For mobile connectivity, the company's own second-generation C2 modem is anticipated. The removal of a physical SIM slot is also likely, meaning the iPhone Fold would function exclusively with eSIM.
Market launch overview
If there are no delays, the iPhone Fold is expected to be released in the fall of 2026, according to Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman. The planned release date coincides with the iPhone 18 Pro models.
How Apple could set new standards with the iPhone Fold
The iPhone Fold is shaping up to be one of the most exciting projects in Apple's product line. A large battery, a focus on efficiency, two displays of practical sizes, and a versatile camera setup suggest a device that clearly distinguishes itself from previous foldables. If current information is accurate, Apple could launch a foldable smartphone that is both practical for everyday use and powerful, setting a serious benchmark for this device category.
