AirPods Pro are now among Apple's most widely used products. Since 2019, Apple has continuously improved the concept without increasing the price. Now, there are increasing indications that a new high-end model will be released in 2026, which will be more expensive for the first time. The potential price increase is causing discussion, but seems logical when considering the planned innovations.
The AirPods Pro 3 were only released in September, but according to new reports, Apple is already working on an enhanced version. The well-known leaker Instant Digital speaks of a model with infrared cameras. These are said to enable new AI features and take the AirPods Pro to the next level technically. The price could rise to around $280 to $299. At the same time, the current standard model is expected to continue selling for $249 (in Germany for €249 ). This would mean Apple would be splitting the product family into two price and performance tiers for the first time.
Why a more expensive AirPods Pro model is on the horizon
For six years, Apple has kept the price of the AirPods Pro stable. Despite new features, improved battery life, enhanced noise cancellation, and several revisions, the $249 mark has remained untouched. In Germany, the price even dropped from €279 to €249 with the introduction of the AirPods Pro 3. The fact that a price increase is now being discussed suggests that Apple is planning a major technological innovation.
According to the leak, the most important of these are the IR cameras. They are intended to enable visual capture and AI features that were previously impossible. Exactly which functions are planned is not yet known. However, anything from improved context perception to new gesture functions is possible. IR cameras in headphones would be a significant step towards intelligent wearables that can do more than just play audio.
Why more power makes sense
AirPods Pro are among the Apple products that are used almost constantly in everyday life. Many people wear them at work, while commuting, walking, or out and about in the city. Even minor improvements have a significant impact on a device that is used daily. A model that gains new AI functions through IR cameras could offer real added value.
The AirPods Pro 3 are already a mature product. Comfort issues often disappear after a short period of use, the sound quality is impressive, and the noise cancellation is excellent. Nevertheless, a premium model allows for innovation without making the regular model more expensive.
Apple's possible plan for 2026
The strategy would be clear: a standard model for $249 ( €249 ) that continues to offer all the familiar features, plus a high-end model above it. This is an approach Apple uses in other areas as well. Those who want the best pay more. Those who are satisfied simply stick with the existing version. The leaker expects a price of at least $280. $299 seems more likely, considering Apple's previous pricing.
AirPods Pro: More features instead of just a price increase
At first glance, a more expensive AirPods Pro model might seem like a price increase without added value. However, hints of IR cameras and new AI features indicate that Apple is working on a significant performance leap. A premium model opens up new possibilities without raising the existing price. For a product used daily, additional features are often worth more than the sheer amount of money. 2026 could therefore see the biggest update to the AirPods Pro series yet.
