After an update to the Apple Watch Ultra in 2024, Apple will equip its entire product line with microLED displays, including the iPhone.

Apple has been developing its microLED display technology for several years and is expected to use it in an update to the Apple Watch Ultra in late 2024. The company may also use the same technology in its other products, such as the iPhone, iPad and Mac line. After spending about six years developing its own microLED displays, which were revealed in 2017 under the codename T159, Apple is close to putting the technology into a real product, as Mark Gurman notes in his Power On newsletter for Bloomberg. reported.

Apple wants to switch all products to microLED displays

A supply chain report in early January suggested the technology could be used in the Apple Watch in 2025, but it is still believed that the 2024 update of the Apple Watch Ultra will be the first to feature the technology. After the 2024 release, Gurman predicts that Apple will make the next microLED upgrade to the iPhone line, the iPad line, and then the Mac line. Apple is expected to eventually add microLED to all major product categories. This plan is believed to be longer term than people think. It could take up to ten years for the technology to make its way to the Mac, in part due to the complexity of the technology.

‌What makes microLED technology so special?

microLED technology features microscopic LEDs that form pixels and provide more accurate colors, high contrast ratio for improved HDR and viewing in suboptimal lighting conditions, support for wider viewing angles, lower risk of screen burn-in over time compared to technologies like OLED, fast response times and low latency to support higher frame rates, and lower power consumption for greater efficiency.
