iPhone 17: Larger display and 120 Hz in the base model

In the run-up to its expected launch in September 2025, rumors surrounding the iPhone 17 are intensifying. The most affordable model in the new series is now in particular focus. Leaks from reliable sources point to specific changes, primarily affecting the display and front camera. Find out exactly what will be different and what will remain the same with the iPhone 17 here.

Apple releases a new iPhone generation every year, but not every upgrade is equally relevant. With the iPhone 17, it seems as if Apple wants to upgrade the base model more specifically – without shifting it too far toward the more expensive Pro devices. This raises the question: What's new, what's staying the same, and is it worth upgrading from the iPhone 16?

Larger display for the base unit

According to the well-known Chinese Weibo leaker "Digital Chat Station," the iPhone 17 will feature a 6.3-inch display. For comparison, the base iPhone 16 has a 6.1-inch display. This information comes from a recent Weibo post. The account has over three million followers and has been known for accurate Apple leaks in the past. This statement is further supported by Ross Young, a well-connected industry analyst and vice president at Counterpoint Research. He also expects the base iPhone 17 model to launch with a 6.3-inch display. According to Young, the expected display sizes for the iPhone 17 series are as follows:

  • iPhone 17: 6.3 inches
  • iPhone 17 Air: 6.6 inches
  • iPhone 17 Pro: 6.3 inches
  • iPhone 17 Pro Max: 6.9 inches

This would put the base unit almost on par with the Pro models for the first time, at least in terms of display area.

Display with 120 Hertz instead of 60

Another difference from the iPhone 16 is the expected refresh rate. The base iPhone 17 is expected to have a display with up to 120 Hertz. The iPhone 16's refresh rate is still 60 Hertz. This would mean that animations, scrolling, and the overall display on the screen will appear significantly smoother. Previously, this technology was reserved exclusively for the Pro models.

Front camera with double resolution

A clear upgrade is also in sight for the front camera. The resolution is expected to increase from 12 megapixels (iPhone 16) to 24 megapixels (iPhone 17). This would be a rare leap for the selfie camera, which could bring noticeable advantages, especially for video calls and portrait shots.

What remains the same

Despite the aforementioned changes, the iPhone 17 will be similar to the iPhone 16 in several respects. Apple is expected to make no changes to the design, so the casing is likely to remain the same. There are also no new technical developments in some areas: The iPhone 17 is expected to use the A18 chip, which is also found in the iPhone 16. 8 GB of RAM is also still being discussed, so no performance increase is expected here.

Market launch likely in September

As is the case every year, Apple is expected to unveil its new iPhone series in September. While there's no exact date for the iPhone 17 yet, Apple typically sticks to its traditional schedule. If all goes according to plan, the iPhone 17 will be officially unveiled in September 2025 and available shortly thereafter.

iPhone 17: More fine-tuning than a new beginning

While the iPhone 17 base model doesn't bring a fundamental overhaul, it does offer targeted improvements in areas that are noticeable in everyday use. A larger display, higher refresh rate, and a better front-facing camera are likely relevant to many users. The design, chip, and RAM remain the same, which is a clear indication that Apple's primary goal is to improve user experience without completely redesigning the device. If you value these features and are looking for a more up-to-date iPhone, the iPhone 17 could be worth it for you. (Image: MajinBu)
