iPhone 14 Pro to do without periscope lens

Paris, France - Sep 24, 2021: Rear view of triple improved camera array on iPhone 13 Pro at the Apple Store as latest new 5G iPhone iPad and iPad mini go on sale - new camera new bionic CPU

Rumors about the iPhone 14 series have been with us for months. Now there is a new forecast regarding the Pro series. According to this, the iPhone 14 Pro will appear with a 48-megapixel camera lens, followed by a model with a periscope lens in 2023.

In a new supply chain analysis, TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo writes that these iPhone camera upgrades will help increase Taiwanese manufacturer Largan Precision's market share, revenue, and profit over the next two years. Kuo did not provide any further details this time. His claim today is not new either. He has already stated several times that the 48-megapixel camera will be limited to the iPhone 14 Pro models and will enable 8K video recording, instead of the current 4K. These high-resolution 8K videos would be suitable for Apple's upcoming AR/VR headset, which is expected to debut in late 2022. Kuo also claimed that the iPhone 14 Pro models could support both 48-megapixel and 12-megapixel resolution, which will likely be achieved using a process known as pixel binning.

Will Apple give the iPhone a periscope camera system?

Pixel binning is already used on some Android smartphones such as the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra and could allow the iPhone 14 Pro models to take 48-megapixel photos in bright light and 12-megapixel photos in low light to preserve quality. Continuing on, Kuo claims that at least one iPhone model will receive a periscope lens in 2023, paving the way for significantly greater optical zoom. This lens would effectively feature folded camera optics. This allows the light absorbed by the image sensor to be bent or "folded", allowing for increased optical zoom and improved image quality while maintaining a compact lens design suitable for smartphones. Whether this will actually be the case in 2023 remains to be seen, of course. (Photo by hadrian / Bigstockphoto)
