iOS 27 is considered the next major system update, clearly distinguishing itself from previous versions. Instead of a constant barrage of features, one goal takes center stage: improved quality and reliable performance. With iOS 27, you can expect a system that is intended to be cleaner, more stable, and more sustainable in the long run.
With the introduction of Liquid Glass this year, Apple rolled out a new design across all platforms. The visual refresh was immediately apparent, but at the same time, reports of bugs, inconsistent performance, and declining stability began to mount. This is precisely where iOS 27 comes in. Internally, the update is being treated as a Snow Leopard-like version. The focus is on the foundation, not the visual spectacle. This strategy comes at an opportune time, as Apple is planning new hardware categories, such as foldable iPhones, which will require a robust operating system.
iOS 27 as a Snow Leopard moment
According to recent reports , iOS 27 will be a version in which development teams systematically clean up the system. Unnecessary bloat is being removed, bugs are being actively sought and fixed, and processes are being streamlined and optimized. This should result in a noticeable increase in overall quality. The goal is a significantly improved performance across the entire system, especially on devices that were already reaching their limits with iOS 26.
macOS 27, watchOS 27, tvOS 27, and visionOS 27 are also expected to follow the same quality path. WWDC26 is therefore likely to be quieter than in previous years. Large, sweeping feature packages are not planned for this year.
AI as a targeted addition
Despite its focus on quality, Apple isn't completely forgoing innovation. Two AI features are already rumored.
- First, Apple is developing an AI-powered health agent, which is expected to launch alongside a potential Apple Health Plus subscription. It is designed to better categorize health data, recognize patterns, and generate more relevant analyses.
- Secondly, Apple is working on its own AI-based web search project. It would be the first of its kind in the company and could represent a long-term alternative to existing search partners.
These features follow the new AI Siri, which is expected to be released with iOS 26.4. It is based on a specially adapted version of Google Gemini, designed to run in Apple's private cloud without sending user data to Google servers.
Other key features in iOS 27
Besides quality and AI, Bloomberg names three additional areas that are expected to shape iOS 27.
- Improvements for enterprise users: Administrative functions and security options will be expanded.
- Special features for emerging markets: Functions that adapt to regional requirements and make devices easier to use there.
- Design maintenance for Liquid Glass: Fine-tuning the new style to make everything appear more consistent and calmer.
These building blocks show that iOS 27 is not trying to impress with big effects. Rather, the system is intended to lay the foundation for the coming years.
iOS 27 as a crucial stability factor
Whether iOS 27 will reach the status of iOS 12 or OS X Snow Leopard remains to be seen. However, the direction seems clear and long overdue. An update that prioritizes quality, meaningfully expands AI, and streamlines the design can achieve more in the long run than any feature overhaul. This is precisely what makes iOS 27 a version that, while more understated, is likely to be crucial for the stability of the next generation of devices. (Image: Shutterstock / CapturePB)
