For a long time, there was little news about Apple's potential smart ring – now the rumor has resurfaced. A leaker claims to have learned that Apple is developing such a device. The speculation is apparently fueled by the continued success of the Oura Ring.
A ring on the finger instead of a watch on the wrist: Apple has been pursuing this idea for years in the form of patents and occasional reports. Recently, however, the topic had gone quiet. A new rumor has now brought the potential wearable back into the conversation – and fits into Apple's growing health ambitions, which were most recently evident in the expanded features of the Health app in iOS 27. However, no concrete technical details are available yet.
The latest clue from the rumor mill
The trigger was a brief statement from leaker and prototype collector Kosutami, indicating that such a device is under development at Apple. According to him, the company is working on a smart ring that could compete with products like the Oura Ring and the Samsung Galaxy Ring. The source did not provide further details – such as sensor technology, design, or a possible timeline. For now, it remains merely an indication that the project exists.
An idea with a long history
The idea isn't new. Several patents have long suggested that Apple is exploring a wearable device for collecting biometric data. As early as 2024, it was reported that the company was considering such a ring as a sensible addition to its wearable product line. The appeal is obvious: a ring would be a significantly less conspicuous health accessory than the Apple Watch and could appeal to those who don't want a visible device on their wrist. However, the rumors subsided over the past two years – until now.
Why now: the Oura factor
The fact that this topic has resurfaced is likely related to the success of the Oura Ring. The current Oura Ring 5 starts at $399 and has apparently caught Apple's attention. The original Oura Ring was launched by the Finnish health technology company Oura back in 2015. The device tracks activity, heart rate, respiratory rate, and sleep data and transmits it via Bluetooth to the accompanying app.
In its fifth generation, the ring is noticeably smaller than its predecessors and brings new health monitoring features – including blood pressure trend detection, nighttime breathing analysis, and tools for recording GLP-1 medication. Sleep analysis, in particular, is an area where Apple Watch data is also increasingly providing valuable insights.
What an iRing would mean for Apple
A smart ring wouldn't be competition for the Apple Watch, but rather a complement – a second, more discreet access point to the same health data. The fact that the impetus came from a competitor fits the pattern: Apple likes to let product categories mature before entering them itself. However, whether the project will become a market-ready device is far from certain. A single hint without technical details is a weak foundation – especially since a smart ring currently appears only peripherally on Apple's roadmap. Nothing has been confirmed yet, and until that changes, the iRing remains a rumor with a history. (Image: Shutterstock / Erman Gunes)
