WhatsApp is no longer just one of the most popular messaging apps worldwide, but is also increasingly developing into a platform for sharing content. WhatsApp Status, in particular, is playing an increasingly important role in this. While relatively unknown in the US, it is already used by around 1.5 billion people worldwide every day. To make this area more attractive, Status is now getting a new feature: a list for close friends. WhatsApp is thus adopting a concept already familiar from Instagram.
WhatsApp Status is very similar to Instagram Stories. Photos, videos, or short texts can be uploaded and automatically disappear after 24 hours. Previously, users could share their content in three different ways: with all contacts, with everyone except selected people, or only with specific contacts. Many people use the third option to share updates only with a certain group of close friends. The new feature makes this process much easier (via WABetaInfo ).
WhatsApp Status and the new flexibility
The introduction of the close friends feature expands the existing options by offering a clear and fixed option. Instead of manually selecting people for your status each time, you can create a special list that is managed directly in your privacy settings. When you upload a new status, you have the choice: either with your entire contact list as before, or exclusively with your close friends. These status updates are marked with a color-contrasting ring. This makes it immediately clear to the selected contacts that this is an update that will not be shared publicly with everyone. The list itself remains completely private. There is no notification when people are added or removed. This means you retain full control without others finding out.
Inspiration from Instagram
The concept originally came from Instagram, where it has been used successfully for years. There, too, users can only share updates with a small group, and the list is private. The parallels are clear, and WhatsApp is thus adopting a feature that has long been established on social networks. This represents a clear improvement for the status section, as users have more freedom and privacy when sharing personal content.
WhatsApp: Close Friends feature makes status more attractive
With the introduction of the Close Friends feature, WhatsApp is further expanding its Status section. For the 1.5 billion people who use Status daily, this means more control and a simpler sharing experience. The ability to share private moments with a smaller group should also make Status more appealing to those who haven't used it before. WhatsApp is thus strengthening the balance between reach and privacy and bringing a familiar yet practical solution to its own messaging app. (Image: Shutterstock / miss.cabul)
